we really pissed this guy off!

excuse me, if may...i once saw a late night infomerical that promoted a weightloss book so i do have merit in this subject. we never said we were shit here. we just made fun of your previous posts.

just because you go to berklee...that doesn't make you shit. it's a real shame they don't offer even a few classes in good character there because obviously, you are lacking some.

ok, i am off to watch a song writing tutorial on youtube!

Check out the Entertainment Law Clinic at Dickinson College of Law.
It graduates some of the top entertainment lawyers in the country. It's services are also FREE, which is awesome if you'd rather not actually PAY someone a thousand dollars an hour.

well mark, ive stood up for you on shit before, even when youve said things that kinda talked down to certain people. why must you act like you are better than everyone else? who cares if you go to berklee? who cares who youre endorsed by? who cares who youve worked with?
NOT ME and im sure a hell of alot of other people. youre attitude and ego overshadows any kind of respect. ive talked to a few guys that have been in bands with you. anyone thats ever said anything about you has only said that youre an egomaniac. its never "but he's a good drummer" or "he's ok sometimes". nothing like that. from almost all your posts you think that YOU are the rockstar. trust me bother, youre NOT. to me, it seems like maybe even that nationals you worked with didnt like youre 'tude or youd be working right now instead of going to school at 50+ years old. maybe youre angry that the fresh blood on rockpage has way more time left than you. there are some GREAT bands in this area. yeah sure, theres egos floating around, but you have NO RIGHT to call anyone a "rockstar" or to talk down to anyone about what they do. the joke IS YOU.

I dont care if anyone agrees with me or not. this guy could be giving tips with that vast knowledge he has, or being supportive to the scene, and he is just mocking us. I wont stand or sit down for it.

+1

My drummer is a Berklee GRADUATE and he is completely level-headed and understands that he has to pay his dues just like anybody else.

I agree with Keith. There have been so many times that you've come on here and complained that you can't find the right musicians around Central PA or that the pay is shit or this or that. I never responded, because it really wasn't my business, but I might as well say it: Mark, you have a reputation around here as a band-jumper, among other things. That's cool if you want to be a freelancer, but anytime I've ever done freelance work, I've made it known from the beginning that I was a hired-gun or was just subbing. If I were looking into a new project and saw that you were involved with it, I'd definitely pass, because I know the project would be sans drummer in two months anyways. You may be able to take on multiple projects in an area like New York and make a decent living. If you want to be comfortable in Central Pa, though, it usually means finding a quality project and STICKING WITH IT, sometimes for years on end. Bands like The Hurricanes and Green Eggs didn't get to the level that they're at with constantly rotating band members who saw another gig they could make $10 more a night by joining.

Yeah, there are some people on this site who need to have their egos put in check. Sometimes I need mine put in check too. The patronizing posts don't help though. Yeah, we know you go to Berklee. Yeah, we know that you played with the dude from Ministry - You found a way to work that into the conversation every chance you got. We could have been talking about what year did Ford put out the best Mustang or who was the best politcal candidate, and you would have come in and reminded us somehow that you played in False Icons with the dude from Ministry. I remember once someone posted here that they got an endorsement. You responded by saying endorsements aren't all that they're cracked up to be. Then a couple months later, you made a thread bragging about a new endorsement that you got. Again, as Keith said, you could bring your knowledge and background to some of us young bucks on here. Instead, you seem bitter that you're not an A-list, first call Nashville or LA session musician.

I'm always suprised by these "big time" players who live in the area and rag on it. It's really hard for them to face that their musical skills or life skills kept them from making it. Getting a taste or playing with so and so is really cool but of no value if you're back in the middle of PA compalining about it. If it's that bad and you happen to be all that as a musician then move and get it the game to the level you say you can opperate at. Otherwise leave everyone alone. We're having fun and enjoying ourselves.

Any musician would benefit by getting out of Altoona and seeing the rest of the world, what it's like, and who else is out there.

I've always taught my son, "Don't ever think you're the best because there is ALWAYS someone better". And when one goes to a big city you find out that there are a lot of extraordinary musicians out there.

With that said, there is a ton of EXTRAORDINARY talent right here in central PA. Some of them might dream of making it big. Let them have their dream. Some are weekend warriors having fun. Let them have their fun.

But don't put them down. Pat them on the back. They are out there applying their craft and supporting the arts ! That is a big deal. WE ALL need to support the arts and we all need to support each other.

Mark, I don't know you, I would like to meet you. I hear you play well. But (there's always a "but") if you spent time supporting and encouraging local talent, no matter what their talent level is or what their goals are, everyone could continue to grow. Not that they couldn't do it without you, but encouragement is a good thing no matter where it comes from.

I would go so far to say that if you are an extraordinary drummer / musician, it is your responsibility to support the arts and that means local musicians. (Read that sentence two or three times.)

Support the arts, support LIVE music, SUPPORT LIVE MUSICIANS !

Without getting into the middle of a gang-tasing of someone I've known for maybe 20 years, Bill, those are words to live by.
Every single time I start feeling like I have something to contribute, that I'm getting pretty good at something or have learned something valuable, I get my feet set firmly back on the ground by someone who makes me look like an amateur.
I've been playing harmonica since 1987. I used to practice a LOT, and I've been fortunate to have friends like Felix Kos, who unselfishly allowed me to play onstage with his band when I really, truly wasn't anywhere near good enough to do so, but the late nights at Old Sab's and Peter C's really did the trick. I got a lot better, and made that leap into the wide open, where I improvise everything on the spot, relying on my heart to play the next note, not repetition. There have been times when I really thought I had the local blues harp market pretty much cornered, nobody was better.
Then came Barney. Barney was a construction worker from Texas, who's one of the sweetest guys ever, always a big smile and a big laugh. I saw him at the Post with the Hurricanes, and I tried my best not to be impressed, but he was pretty damn good, so real, his tone so... greasy. I saw him again a week or so later, and I'd had this idea that I was going to bring my harps and show him "what fer." My little harp belt was all loaded up and sitting on the table in front of me, a signal that I came to play, and Felix asked me up for a little harmonica jam, which to me , was what blues players call a "headcutting," or a competition.
I only played for maybe a half-hour at most, but it seemed like forever. Barney stood over by Felix, playing through a borrowed rig. He graciously allowed me to take the first solo, which I played admirably, I thought. Barney then proceeded to musically beat me like a red-headed step-child. He had been subdued up until then, apparently, because he lit afire when I was up there. He swooped, and stung, and played staccato tongue-blocks, and every effing thing he played was nasty and deep and painfully beautiful. Barney the construction worker handed me my ass. When it was over, I was out of breath and exhausted, but to him it was just another white boy trying to out-blues a bluesman. To top it all off, he KNEW how well he had just played (the audience was treated to the maybe the finest display of harpoon fireworks EVER around here), but he was quiet and gracious and his satisfied grin was the thing I was jealous of most. He didn't have to tell everyone that he had just turned me out. He knew, and I knew.
Now you all know.
It's funny, though I'm prone to ego sometimes, the harder I work at being good at something, the more humble I get. I got to where the dobro was coming to me easier, where I'm sitting close to the top of the pile locally, and along comes someone like Sav Sankaran, who's not only good at EVERYTHING bluegrass, but is 23 freaking years old. I was still pretty horrible at 23, but he's playing better than I am now. Then I listen to a national act like The Infamous Stringdusters, and wonder why I even try, they're so far advanced.
I've written a LOT of songs since I was a child, and I've won a few national contests and been warmly received in Nashville. I like to think that's my only real talent, songwriting. Then I hear something my friend Doug Forshey wrote, and it's so well-crafted that I get sad and frustrated., because I'll never be able to mix melody and lyrical depth so well

I've learned to do what I do, and manage an uncomfortable smile when somebody pats me on the back. Barney and I know the truth.---->JMS

Great post about a "life's lesson learned". But don't get me wrong. I am not judging Mark in any way. I don't know him. I was just throwing out some random personal philosophy while trying not to bore anyone. Very Happy

Every musician has a different idea and a different goal or dream. Although I live for my band and do everything in my power to help us advance, my goal is to ultimately see as much and do as much as I can before I am at the crossroads of music and career. I don't use music for money or for fame or anything like that. I do it because I love playing. Music has given me so much throughout my life, I feel by me playing and putting my heart into it, that's the best thing I can do to give something back to music and the scene.

Now, I'm a drummer that did not go to Berkley, but I feel my desire to progress and learn and better myself makes up for any shortcomings I may have.

While looking back at footage of my first band playing a show I was reminded of how I should always approach playing. We were a young punk band playing a bar for three people and the main band, and it was the funnest show I had ever had up to that point. The point of that is, when it comes to playing, never become jaded and lose the innocence of playing.

You seem to feel you always have something to prove to somebody and that we all owe you something because of your 'credentials'. That attitude doesn't cary you too far. Really, just get over yourself.

I got into music and bands so I could see more boobs.

nearly three decades later, I mostly play in a band so I can see more boobs.

I can barely read music, and I'm not sure I could find Berkeley on a map, but I'm pretty sure I made more money as a musician last year than this douchebag. And I don't need no steenking lawyer (and certainly not one from Philly)

Oh, and....boobs
