Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the February 3 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBXQ 94.3. The show is brought to you by The Altoona Curve (www.altoonacurve.com), “Everybody’s Hometown Team!”

We knew what we were up against; major competition from the sporting world. But rain, sleet, snow or the Super Bowl won’t stop the “Backyard Rocker” from its appointed rounds; and while the big football game drama played out in Arizona, we presented the annual “Super Bowl Widow’s Special,” and put the spotlight on the ladies of local and regional music. We heard from the women who sing and play instruments on the local and regional music scene. Along the way, we debuted new tunes from Just Megan, Jennifer Drummey and the Small Band, Haley Sheeler and Meghan Carr. We also updated Local Music News, and presented two editions of “The Professor’s CD Corner;” reviewing Christine Havrilla’s Velocity CD during the first hour and Deja Vudoo’s Scratching the Surface CD during the second hour. (The reviews can be read in the “Backyard Rocker” section of the message board area on Q94’s website, www.wbxq.com.)

Here is this week’s playlist (the lady being spotlighted is listed in parentheses):

SHADES OF JUNE – “Reflection” (Jess Maguire – vocals)
ISSUES – “Back Atcha” (Clorise Eles – vocals)
9 PLANET TOUR – “You Got It” (Erika Marino – vocals)

DENISE BALDWIN – “Giants Tumble” (Denise – vocals/guitar)
SHANNON MARSYADA – “Valleys” (Shannon – vocals/keys/drum mixes)
HANNAH BINGMAN – “Finished Finé Done” (Hannah – vocals/guitar)
HALEY SHEELER – “Soldier, Soldier” (Haley – vocals/guitar)

HOUR TWO:

ACALASIA – “So Much for the Railcar” (Krystal Shore – vocals)
HALESTORM – “It’s Not You” (live) (Lzzy Hale – vocals/guitar)
SHERRI MULLEN – “Fearless” (Sherri – vocals/guitar)

Next Sunday night, it will be like a two-hour local and regional music concert! Along the way, we’ll review the new live CD from Steve Summerhill, One Man Band, in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” The “Local Music Live in Concert” special edition of the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

The line-up and other details have been finalized for the Deb Osborn Benefit Show. The show will take place Feb. 16 at 30 Something (formerly City Limits) in Greenwood, with proceeds helping out Deb’s surviving family, including husband Don Osborn (Square One, Big Mac and Fries) and son Sean Osborn (Born and the Beanstalk), following her sudden passing in December. The show will kick off at 6 PM with The British Invasion, and feature performances through the evening by Big Mac and Fries, Square One and Splink! Born and the Beanstalk will perform acoustic sets in between band changeovers, and a jam session will end the night. Admission will be a $10 donation, and advance tickets will be available from each band.

A special benefit show is being organized to help out renowned Pittsburgh blues-rock guitarist Tony Janflone, Jr. Tony has been on a hiatus from performing since the end of last year due to neck injuries sustained in an automobile accident in September. The “That’s What Friends Are For” concert was organized by Tony's saxophonist, Curtis Swift, and one of Tony’s guitar students, Derek Bayer, to help with the mounting unpaid medical bills from Tony's emergency appendix surgery last July and the auto accident. The show will be held on Thursday March 13th, from 7-11 pm at The Rhythm House in Bridgeville, near Pittsburgh, and will feature friends of Tony such as Donnie Iris, Rob James of The Clarks, Billy Price, The Skip Peck Band, Frankie Capri, Tony’s father, Tony Janflone Sr., D.C. Tanner and others. Tickets are $20, and advance tickets will be available.

Some big news regarding Latrobe blues rocker Tony Mollick…Tony has been hired on to be the guitar tech for Jon Oliva’s Pain tour from April 22 through May 15. Tony will be filling in for Jon’s regular guitar tech. Tony will join the tour in Germany, and travel with the former Savatage and Trans-Siberian Orchestra singer and collaborator on dates in Norway, Greece, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands. According to Tony, his Tony Mollick Project still plans to record and release their second CD before he leaves and will still be playing a full schedule through the rest of the year.

The Rock Brothers have added a fifth member, as former Red Arrow and Half Tempted bassist Jim Ricotta has joined the group to play guitar and sing backing vocals.

A new hard-rocking band featuring former members of 4 Days Dirty, Saucemonster, Hexhed and The Opposition made their debut on local stages last month. The new band, This Calling, features Joe Neary and Chris Silva on guitars and vocals, Bill Fischer on bass and Justin Fair on drums. The group played their first opening for Bad Daze at 30 Something in Altoona.

And we at Q94 offer our sincerest condolences to the surviving family and friends of Wayne Weierick of Altoona. Wayne, the former manager of the Victory Lane Saloon, passed away last weekend as the result of an accidental fall in a wooded area in Altoona. He was 54.
