Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the Jan. 4 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 9 to 11 PM during Pittsburgh Steelers football season. (The show will air from 8 to 10 PM after the Steelers' season concludes.)

We kicked off 2009 with a busy program, as we checked out new music that arrived at “Homegrown Rocker” headquarters over the holiday season. We debuted new songs from Heavy Radio, Appalachian Translator, Beer and Pretzels, Fountain of Tears, Suicide Switch and Skell. We updated Local Music News, and broke out a 1997 tune by Of Sound Mind for a Local Music Flashback. We also reviewed Nate Myers & the Aces’ latest CD, Persist, in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

MATT WAGNER – “Cycle”
SOUND DRIVEN – “Antelopium”
HEAVY RADIO – “Surrounder”
TONY MOLLICK PROJECT – “That’s All Right”
APPALACHIAN TRANSLATOR – “Who Are Them”
ACALASIA – “Barely Breathing”
EVELYN’S ASHES – “Backdown”
HI-TYDE – “One Who Cares”
BEER AND PRETZELS – “Bird in a Beehive”
THE LAMPSHADES – “What’s That Mean”

HOUR TWO:

THE GRIMM – “Raise the Line”
SPIRIT LOST – “Misery of a Wounded Heart”
LARRY NATH – “Angel in Disguise”
NATE MYERS & THE ACES – “Beauty All Around”
FOUNTAIN OF TEARS – “Weeping Sky/Corruption”
OF SOUND MIND – “Down in a Hole” (1997, Local Music Flashback)
SUICIDE SWITCH – “Conflicted”
WAY DOWN EAST – “Caught in the Crosshairs”
SKELL – “Head”
SOLEGION – “Lord of All”
THE RUSTLANDERS – “Beginning to Show Through”

Next Sunday night, we will again showcase maximum local and regional music, as we debut more new recordings on the show, update Local Music News, and review Xhibition’s debut CD, Taking Back the Power, in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Since the Pittsburgh Steelers’ playoff game against the San Diego Chargers starts late Sunday afternoon, the “Homegrown Rocker’s” start time may be delayed, pending the completion of the Steelers’ broadcast. But better late than never, be listening for more maximum local music on the “Homegrown Rocker,” next Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

JAN. 18 – XHIBITION
*FEB. 1 – SUPER BOWL WIDOW’S SPECIAL (THE LADIES OF LOCAL MUSIC)
FEB. 8 – JOHN CIMINO (THUNDERBOX)
FEB. 15 – COVER SONG SPECIAL
FEB. 22 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP SPECIAL

(* – This special will air if Rocky 104.9 does not carry the Super Bowl broadcast itself. If Rocky broadcasts the game, the “Homegrown Rocker” will be cancelled for that week.)

In Local Music News…

Some band personnel news to launch the New Year…Former Red Arrow/BluesMoon bassist Big Jim Ricotta has joined up with State College rockers G211. Jim made his debut with that band last weekend in the State College area.

Popular modern rockers Emily’s Toybox recently changed two members in their roster. Joining remaining members Mike Wise on vocals and Wade Corbin on drums are former Amy K Band/Wiskerbisket bassist Millhouse and new guitarist Jason Mitchell. After the group gets their live show back up to full speed, they plan to record their next CD for release later this year.

We’re only four days into 2009, and already a new band has debuted on local stages. The Ren debuted this past Friday night at 30 Something in Altoona. The band features the former Gin & Juice nucleus of singer/guitarist Dustin Burley and drummer Kyle Kovach, along with Justin Bush on bass and vocals. Like Gin & Juice before them, The Ren also performs an eclectic blend of sounds, and incorporates jam-geared improvisation into their performance.

And although January tends to be a slow time of the year for new CD releases, two new albums from the state’s music scene are already about to hit the streets. Reading-based singer and songwriter Valerie Nicole is set to release her first full length CD, From the Heart, with an official CD-release event slated for this weekend at a Reading area venue. And Harrisburg’s Hierosonic is set to release their new full-length CD. The new album, Kymatica, hits the streets at the end of this month after a full year recording process. The album will be officially christened on January 31 at a CD release event in the Harrisburg area.
