Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the Feb. 15 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM.

This week, we explored the world of cover songs and remakes from area musicians’ perspectives, via our Cover Song Special. We featured two hours of covers and remakes; some of popular hits, others of more obscure and influential songs from a wide range of artists. Along the way, we introduced new remakes from Rise Phoenix Rise and The Worry Knot. We also updated Local Music News, and featured a Rolling Stones remake by Kindred Spirit from 1969, to mark the passing of one of that band’s guitar players, Joe Neminich (see Local Music News below).

Here is this week's playlist (covered band/artist in parentheses):

HOUR ONE:

MICHAEL REICH – “Heart of Gold” (Neil Young)
JOHN CHARNEY with WHITE MOJO – “I’ve Got My Mojo Workin’” (Muddy Waters)
RISE PHOENIX RISE – “Wonderwall” (Oasis)
NITEKAST – “Worlds Collided (Never Tear Us Apart)” (INXS)
JERRY’S FAULT – “My Back Pages” (Byrds)

DAVE HOLT BAND – “Voodoo” (Neville Brothers)
JUSTIN MACK – “Long Black Veil” (Johnny Cash)
61 SOUTH – “12 Gates to the City” (Rev. Gary Davis)
FAT VINNY & THE WISEGUYS – “The Jack” (AC/DC)

This Sunday night, we recap the 13th annual Millennium Music Conference, which took place this past weekend in the Harrisburg area. We will report on the happenings over the four-day event, feature sound clips from the conference, and play music from some of the over 200 bands and artists who converged on the Harrisburg area to showcase their talents. We'll also review a CD from a showcasing Millennium band, Lakeherst's Euan Aura, in "The Professor's CD Corner." We recap the Millennium Music Conference on the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

Fire recently damaged a Cambria County venue that has hosted live music. Johnny Angel’s in Portage suffered damage to its basement area when fire erupted there on February 3. According to owner John Gartland, the main bar and lounge area only suffered minor smoke damage. Portage fire officials did not believe the fire was suspicious. Gartland said he plans to repair and reopen the business.

Williamsport heavy metal rockers 44 Mag are marking their tenth anniversary as a band next month with a special show honoring one of their biggest influences. “Magtallica,” 44 Mag’s one-night tribute to Metallica, will take place on Saturday night, March 21, at the Sons Of Italy hall in Williamsport. Advance tickets are $10; for more information or to obtain tickets, visit 44 Mag’s Myspace website, www.myspace.com/44magband.

A rhythm section change for Altoona-based heavy rockers FedUP…The group has announced that Eric Ernst has taken over drum duties, replacing Matt Popp, while Joe Schratzmeier replaces Roman Dell on bass. FedUP intends to return to local stages starting in April.

And the area music scene mourned the recent passing of a longtime Johnstown area musician. Joe Nemanich passed away on February 6 at his Johnstown home at age 58. Joe was a talented guitar player who enjoyed a 40-year career on area stages; performing with such bands as Kindred Spirit, Lickety Split, Grapes Of Wrath, Down To The Wire, Stillwater, Brother John, GauchoMarx and more.
