Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the May 10 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).
With no guests scheduled again for this week, we broke out more of the numerous recordings that have arrived at “Homegrown Rocker” headquarters in recent weeks. We debuted new music from Conner Gilbert, Harold Taddy, Ted McCloskey, Kun-Tajus, Ceann, David Fiorenza, Beaucoup Blue, Deep Seeded, Ultima U.S., Suicide Puppets, False Icons and Mercy Nation. We also updated Local Music News, and checked out a 1999 tune from Altoona metalheads Broken Neck for a Local Music Flashback. In addition, we reviewed Halestorm’s self-titled Atlantic Records studio CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Again, another busy week!

Slacker Theory visits the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night!

In Local Music News…
The music slate has been announced for next weekend’s annual Blair County Arts Festival, taking place next Saturday and Sunday at Penn State Altoona. Saturday’s musical entertainment includes Mysterytrain, Matt Wagner, the Sharptones, the Mark DeRose Duo, folk performers Jay Smar and Jerry Haines, the Summit City Saints Dixieland band, and Your Dad’s Friends. In addition, the winners of the Festival’s Songwriting Contest will perform. On Sunday, Arts Festival musical entertainment will include Euphoria, Janet Spahr on hang drum, Jay Smar, Dan Hulse, Celtic-geared acts Tree and The Michael O’Brian Band, The Sharptones and a reunion performance of the U.S. Sound Theatre. Admission to the festival both days is free; there is a donation to park.
While eastern Pennsylvania blues trio 61 South has taken their live show off stage, the group’s members and their associated side projects have stepped up activity in the recording studio, with many new CD’s in the wings. According to the group’s latest newsletter, group leader Sterling Koch’s previous blues project, the Victory In Heaven Blues Band, is recording a new CD for a fall release. That group’s funky offshoot, V.I.H., is also entering the studio to record a new CD. Sterling Koch’s daughter and 61 South bass player Kate Koch is working on her first solo album, an electronica CD. There will also be a new 61 South CD recorded this fall. And Sterling Koch himself is planning to record a new solo CD with a bluesy direction.
Two area bands have gone their separate ways. Altoona’s Moxie has separated citing musical differences, while Johnstown rock band Pelt finished their five-year run on area stages with their final show last weekend. Both bands’ members are looking to get involved with new projects.
And sad news to report…The Altoona music scene lost a friend and valued member with the passing of Harry Walter last weekend at age 63. Harry was the bass player for local blues band The Hawks, and previously played bass in the band Generation Gap and acoustic trio Midnight Flyer. A special tribute show and jam session in memory of Harry Walter will take place next Sunday afternoon starting at 3 p.m. at 30 Something in Greenwood.
