Hello Everyone,
Here is the recap of the May 17 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).
Thanks to our guests this week, Steve, Rob and Ryan from Slacker Theory (www.myspace.com/slackertheorymusic) for a fun and informative two hours! We learned the story of the band, heard insight on their music and live show, and checked out tunes from their CD Better This Way. (Thanks again to The Underground Television for the use of their studio facility!) In addition, we debuted new tunes from Ted McCloskey, The Delve, Halestorm and Nick Finochio. We also updated Local Music News, and checked out a 1998 tune from York-based hard rockers Fist for a Local Music Flashback. In addition, we reviewed Skell’s Shangri LA 27 CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Again, another busy week!

This Sunday night, it’s our annual three-hour Memorial Day Special, and a trip down local music memory lane! During the show’s first two hours, we’ll hear tunes from past local and regional bands that used to grace area stages. During the third hour, we’ll pay homage to some of the local musicians who are no longer with us, celebrating their memory with the music they left behind. It’s one of our most popular shows every year – enjoy local music memories on the Memorial Day Special edition of the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night starting at 7 PM!

In Local Music News…
A local band has advanced to the next round of the Musikfest Mid-Atlantic Band Competition. Chris Vipond and the Stanley Street Band was selected out of 230 initial band entrants to be one of 20 bands fans get to vote for online to win a chance to perform live on the Plaza Tropical stage at Musikfest in Bethlehem on Aug. 3 and 4. Through a public online vote, the bands will be narrowed down from 20 acts to the four that will perform at the festival. The winner of the competition will walk away with a prize package featuring a professional music video shoot and a guaranteed booking at Musikfest 2010. The four finalists performing at Musikfest 2009 will also receive a cash prize. The online voting begins on Monday, May 18; for a link to cast your vote for Chris Vipond and the Stanley Street Band, visit the group’s Myspace website, www.myspace.com/chrisvipond.
Some former members of Indiana-based rock group Soundrive recently split off, formed a new group and released an album. The Sunflower Spectacle, founded by former Soundrive guitarist Chris Kupchella, formed last year. The group recently released their first CD, Too Anxious for Rivers.
And a reminder that the all-ages “Rock and Roll for the Reed Boys” benefit concert for the Korbin Reed Fund happens next Sunday afternoon at 30 Something in Greenwood. The show starts at 1 p.m., and will feature performances from the bands E.V.K., Slacker Theory, Bad Daze, thingy Shack Posse, This Calling, A Fight With Sledgehammers, The Embalmed, FedUP and Samara. Donation for adults is either $10 or $5 with a toy suitable for a 2-4 year-old boy; donation is $5 for kids ages 6 to 12, and free for ages 5 and under.
