Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the September 13 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

Thanks to our guests this week, Altoona-based metal rockers Samara, for a pounding two hours! (Thanks also to Chris and The Underground Television for providing the studio facility for this week’s interview.) We met the band members and learned their story to date, and received insight on their multi-faceted brand of heavy-rocking music and live show. We heard tracks from Samara’s debut EP, The Beginning of Your End, and two lucky listeners won copies and a T-shirt! We also updated Local Music News, reviewed Ninetail’s Half Truths and Hand Grenades CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and heard a 1995 song by Loud Silence for a “Local Music Flashback.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

PHOBOS ANOMALY – “Reassembly”
SPIRIT LOST – “Soul Seeker”
SAMARA – “Devil’s Dance”
BLAKKJAK – “Blitzkrieg Destruction”
SAMARA – “Eyes”
THIS CALLING – “The Day I Died”
SAMARA – “The Anger Remains”

HOUR TWO:

CHAPTER 5 – “Compromised”
WAY DOWN EAST – “Caught in the Crosshairs”
SAMARA – “Fallen”
NINETAIL – “The Decider”
SAMARA – “Modern Day Christ”
LOUD SILENCE – “River of Darkness” (1995, Local Music Flashback)
SAMARA – “Bow”

This Sunday night, we move back to the football season air time of 9 to 11 PM for the duration of Pittsburgh Steelers football season. Our guests this week will be new local alternative/funk/rock trio The Ruins! We’ll meet the band members and learn their story, hear recorded songs from the group, and they’ll bring along instruments and perform some live tunes for us as well! We’ll also update Local Music News, review Shattered Ice’s self-titled CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and dig into the local music archive for another “Local Music Flashback!” The Ruins visit the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night starting at 9!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

SEPT. 27 – STERLING KOCH (V.I.H. BLUES BAND)
OCT. 4 – (NO SHOW DUE TO STEELERS FOOTBALL)
OCT. 11 – HOMEGROWN ROCKER 1ST ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
OCT. 25 – WHITE WITCH (HALLOWEEN SPECIAL)

In Local Music News…

Several area bands have decided to close out their runs on area stages in recent weeks. Altoona's Like A Movie has decided to disband after four years of performing, touring and a CD. The group cited recent inactivity in their decision to call it quits. The parting is mutual and on good terms, and the band members intend to continue their musical endeavors in new projects.

Two young area metal bands have called it quits. Bedford's The Battle and Williamsburg's Assault Method have both decided to go their separate ways.

Some changes for Altoona-based heavy rockers Naildriver...Former Flame Sky guitarist Jason Feathers has taken over bass duties in Naildriver, replacing Dan Mullan. And the group is now seeking a drummer to replace Randy Sciarrillo, who recently announced his departure from the band.

And a late October benefit concert in Beaver County will feature one of the largest drum circles ever assembled. ZanaFest 2009 will take place on October 24 and 25 at The Venue at Harmony Ridge, formerly the Ambridge Country Club. The benefit is being organized to remember Richard Zana, an influential Beaver County music teacher; and proceeds will benefit a memorial scholarship fund in his name. Zana passed away last year after a long battle with cancer. The event will open with a huge drum circle, before multiple entertainers will perform for the duration of the event. For more information, visit the ZanaFest website at www.zanafest.com.
