Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 17 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

Thanks to our guests this week, Centre County hard rockers Mindspine (www.myspace.com/mindspinerock.) We met the band members and learned their story, and heard recorded tracks from the group. We also debuted new tunes from My Inner Animal and Sickleeye, updated Local Music News, reviewed The Embalmed’s What Would Judas Do CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and dug into the local music archive for a 1996 song by Clearfield County rockers Rude Dawg for a “Local Music Flashback!”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

INSIDE OUT – “Sacrifice”
SLACKER THEORY – “Shake”
MINDSPINE – “Forgotten You”
MY INNER ANIMAL – “Daisy”
MINDSPINE – “Move”
SKELL – “Don’t Speak”
MINDSPINE – “Monster”

HOUR TWO:

SICKLEEYE – “Day My Old Man Dies”
WAY DOWN EAST – “Freezer Champ”
MINDSPINE – “Right Through”
THE EMBALMED – “Grave Depression”
MINDSPINE – “Broken Knows Broken”
RUDE DAWG – “Kings and Conquerors” (1996, Local Music Flashback)

This Sunday night, our guests will be Johnstown metal artisans The Embalmed! We’ll meet the band’s current edition, and get inside the songs and the creation of the group’s new CD, What Would Judas Do. We’ll also update Local Music News, feature another “Local Music Flashback” and review a new local/regional CD in the “Professor’s CD Corner!” The Embalmed visits the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night at 8 PM!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

JAN. 31 – CONNER GILBERT
FEB. 7 – SUPER BOWL WIDOW’S SPECIAL (THE LADIES OF LOCAL MUSIC)
FEB. 14 – LOVE STINKS SPECIAL (LOCAL MUSIC BREAK-UP SONGS)
FEB. 28 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP SPECIAL

In Local Music News…

In the aftermath of this past week’s devastating earthquake in Haiti, a special local music event has been announced to help out the earthquake relief efforts. Saint Francis University’s Fine Arts Department will present “A Concert For Haiti 2010” on Monday, January 25, at 8 p.m. in the JFK Student Center on the university’s Loretto campus. The concert will feature Jim Donovan’s Drum the Ecstatic International and the Saint Francis University World Drumming Ensemble. Donovan, drummer and founding member of the platinum-selling band Rusted Root, is organizing the effort and will perform in the concert. Cash donations will be taken at the door, with a suggested minimum donation of $5 for students and children under 12 and a $10 for the general public.

Another benefit show featuring an area band will take place in February to help out an infant. The Madison Anderson Sweetheart Dance will take place on Saturday night, February 13 starting at 6 PM at the Curwensville Moose, and will feature entertainment by Clearfield County rockers The Zoo. Organized by the Clearfield Chinklacamoose Chapter of A.B.A.T.E., the event’s proceeds will help out 9-month-old Madison Anderson, who is battling meningococcemia. Donation at the door is $10, which includes the band, food and refreshments.

A new band has formed from the ashes of former Johnstown rockers Lost Ledny. Dilltown Militia features former Lost Ledny frontman Matt Cherry. The group has announced their first show, happening February 27 at a Cambria County venue.

Two other new bands have formed as well. Four former members of Johnny Cash tribute band Ole 97 have broken away to form The Runaways, and will perform ‘50s and ‘60s rock’n’roll plus some country. And from the ashes of the short-lived band No Guarantee comes a new five-piece band called Vapor Lock. Both bands will play their first shows on area stages soon.
