Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the February 7 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

We knew what we were up against from the sporting world on this past Sunday’s program. While New Orleans was staging their second-half comeback win over Indianapolis on the gridiron, we celebrated the ladies of local music in our annual “Super Bowl Widows’ Special!” We shined the spotlight on some of the many ladies who sing, play instruments and make music on stage and in the studio here in central Pennsylvania and across the state. Along the way, we debuted new tunes from Rain Must Fall, Jackie Kopco and The Sketties; and we remembered the late “Queen Bee” Tonya Browne with a 1998 song by Queen Bee & the Blue Hornet Band for a Local Music Flashback. We updated Local Music News, and reviewed Karen and Amy Jones’ Daphne In Winter CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE (spotlighted lady musician in parentheses):

SHERRI MULLEN – “Fearless”
MYCENEA WORLEY – “100 Days”
GINA RIGGIO – “Body”
MAXWELL STRAIT – “Babblefish” (Molly Countermine – vocals/keys)
RAIN MUST FALL – “Superficial Stain” (Bree Gearhart – guitar/keys/vocals)
NITEKAST – “Now I Have to Go” (Lily Taylor – vocals/keys)
DEB CALLAHAN – “Fat Cat”
SKYLA BURRELL BLUES BAND – “Dirt Poor” (Skyla Burrell – vocals/guitar)
DENISE BALDWIN – “Standing in the Rain”
JACKIE KOPCO – “Far From Here”
THE SKETTIES – “Be Gone” (Allissa Amer – vocals/keys)

HOUR TWO:

BEN HARDT & HIS SYMPHONY – “Avalanche” (Joya Varma, Kendra Osterhout, Angela Lansinger, Dawn Candish – strings)
SARAH FLECK & THE PALPITATIONS – “Copper Shoes” (Sarah Fleck – drums, Kristin Gdula – bass/vocals)
ELEMENT OF SURPRISE – “Holding on to Nothing” (Tara McCombie – vocals/guitar/percussion)
KAREN AND AMY JONES – “Brittle Creatures”
ANGEL BLUE & THE PROPHETS – “Short Chain” (Angela “Angel Blue” D’Ambrosio – vocals)
QUEEN BEE & THE BLUE HORNET BAND – “90 M.P.H.” (“Queen Bee” Tonya Browne – vocals) (1998, Local Music Flashback)
DAILY DAILY – “15” (Carrie Rapaport – vocals)
STASIS – “Promises” (Julia Glenn – vocals)
ACALASIA – “Paint These Smiles On” (Krystal Shore – vocals)
HALESTORM – “What Were You Expecting?” (Lzzy Hale – vocals/guitar)
SPIRIT LOST – “Dreams” (Lisa Fazenbaker – drums)

Since our next show happens to fall on Valentine’s Day, we’ll provide some relief to those whose hearts have been ripped out, kicked around and "tossed aside like a bag of moldy tangerines." It’s the first ever “Love Stinks Special,” where the spotlight will be on local musicians’ song creations about break-ups, goodbyes, good riddances and more! We’ll also update Local Music News, review another local CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and dig into the local music archive for another “Local Music Flashback!” It’s the “Love Stinks Special” edition of the “Homegrown Rocker” next Sunday night; if you think the only person who knew how to properly celebrate Valentine’s Day was Al Capone, this show’s for you!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 28 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP SPECIAL
MAR. 7 – JACKSON MONSOUR
MAR. 14 – KAJ
MAR. 21 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE CONTEST WINNER

In Local Music News…

The Johnstown Area Heritage Association announced the dates for this year’s second annual Flood City Music Festival, the event that replaced Johnstown Folkfest last year. This year’s Flood City Music Festival will take place from August 6-8 at Festival Park near downtown Johnstown. More information about this year’s Festival will be announced later this year.

There is sad news to report from the Pittsburgh music scene…Guitarist Warren King lost his battle with liver cancer on January 29. Warren was the lead guitar player for Diamond Reo in the seventies, and later played alongside Diamond Reo bandmate Norman Nardini in The Eastside Tigers, before leaving to form The Silencers. After the Silencers, King played blues in such bands as Red, Hot & Blue and The Mystic Knights of the Sea, and also did short stints with The Houserockers and Torn & Frayed. A memorial tribute to Warren King took place Saturday at Moondogs in Blawnox, north of Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh’s Mark Stutso, who recently played drums with Norman Nardini during Mark “Whitey” Cooper’s leave of absence from the group, and who also played for 18 years with former Nighthawks guitarist Jimmy Thackery, has become the new drummer for Thackery’s former band, replacing Pete Ragusa as drummer for The Nighthawks. Mark and The Nighthawks will be coming to the Altoona area next month, performing a show at Pellegrine’s March 19.

The former members of the Tony Mollick Project are busy with some new – and old – endeavors. Tony, his former One Night Stand bandmates Ryan O’Neill on keys and Kurt Brown on guitars, plus drummer Shawn King, are currently recording the debut CD of their heavy metal project Synesthesia, and are seeking a powerhouse singer of the Rob Halford/Ronnie James Dio variety to finish the project. Interested singers may inquire on Synesthesia’s Myspace website, www.myspace.com/synesthesiaus. In addition, Tony and his Tony Mollick Project bandmates Fuzz McGirk on bass and David Blake on drums have joined the reuniting Westmoreland County ‘80s rock group Genghis Khan. And Fuzz, Ryan McNeill and Shawn King are debuting another new project on western Pennsylvania stages in May; that new band is called The Madkatz.
