Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 14 edition of Rocky 99 and Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com) and WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

The “Homegrown Rocker” took the next step in its evolution this past Sunday, as it aired for the first time on Rocky 99, and can now spread the evangel of local and regional bands and artists to listeners in Johnstown, Somerset, Indiana and throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. Thanks to the powers that be at Rocky 99 for giving the show this opportunity!

On the show itself, it was a busy week! Thanks to our band guests this week, singer Walt Wright and guitarist Curt Costanzo of Kittanning-based hard rockers “kāj” (www.kajmusic.com). We learned all about “kāj” (including the story behind the unusual spelling of their name, which is the phonetic pronunciation of “cage”), and heard tracks from their newly-released second full-length CD, Cold Silence. We also featured a phone conversation with Mark Wenner, the singer and harmonica player for legendary blues rockers The Nighthawks, who are visiting central PA next weekend for shows in Altoona and State College! We debuted new songs from Rhyne McCormick and Chasing Darwin, and dug a 1997 song from Petey Gets Around from the archives for this week’s “Local Music Flashback.” We updated “Local Music News,” reviewed Jakesway’s Catching Wakefield CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and even engaged in some St. Patrick’s Day chicanery with tunes from The Clover and Michael O’Brian Band! Wow, what a week!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

THE CLOVER – “Kiss Me I’m Irish Today”
MICHAEL O’BRIAN BAND – “Whiskey in the Jar” (live)
“kāj” – “About You”
RHYNE McCORMICK – “Deeper” (live)
“kāj” – “Down”
CHASING DARWIN – “Hungry Eyes”
“kāj” – “Cold Silence”

HOUR TWO:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Walking A Straight Line”
THE NIGHTHAWKS – “You Don’t Love Me”
“kāj” – “The Walls”
JAKESWAY – “Happy Young Man”
“kāj” – “Rise Up”
PETEY GETS AROUND – “Along for the Ride” (1997, Local Music Flashback)
“kāj” – “Before I Can Breathe”

On our next program, our guests will be Harrisburg modern rockers Chasing Darwin. Chasing Darwin won an interview and guest slot on the program during last month’s Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg. In an interview recorded on site at Millennium, we’ll get you acquainted with the band members, find out Chasing Darwin’s story, and hear songs from their self-titled CD! We’ll also update Local Music News, feature another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Rotten Belly Blues’ self-titled CD in the “Professor’s CD Corner!” Learn about Chasing Darwin on the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night at 8 PM!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

MAR. 28 – JEFF WALLACK MEMORIAL JAM PREVIEW
APR. 4 – ALL JOHNSTOWN RADIO SPECIAL
APR. 11 – RICH “ALL HEART” EDMUNDSON
APR. 18 – WAYSTED SYLENCE
APR. 25 – THE ELDER STATESMEN OF LOCAL MUSIC SPECIAL
MAY 30 – MEMORIAL DAY SPECIAL

In Local Music News…

State College-based Americana rockers The Rustlanders hit the road this week to kick off a busy spring. The group heads to Austin, Texas next weekend to perform at the prestigious South By Southwest Music Conference. They will then be hooking up with renowned indie singer/songwriter Ryan Bingham for a series of southern tour dates during May. And the group is also heading to Los Angeles to record their new CD. Before hitting the road, Rustlanders singer/guitarist Jason McIntyre sat in with Pat McGinnis this past Thursday night at Shaw’s in Juniata. That was Jason’s last local appearance until after The Rustlanders return from their cross-country sojourn.

Altoona blues band The Hawks has changed bass players. Pete Caccamo recently departed the band to explore a jazz direction. Replacing him is longtime Altoona area bassist Jim Colyer, formerly of the Rhythm Kings and Lodge Lizzards.

Johnstown’s Satori Gallery will mark its second anniversary with a special show next Saturday evening, March 20. The show will feature works from artists who have participated during the gallery’s first two years, and musical performances as well. The show will run from 8 to 11 p.m. Admission is free, and donations to the gallery will be accepted.
