Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 2 edition of Rocky 99 and Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com) and WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

Thanks to our guests on this week’s program, Johnstown-based psychedelic rockers The Sunflower Spectacle (www.myspace.com/thesunflowerspectacle). (Thanks also to Chris Peters and The Underground Television for use of their studio facility for this week’s interview.) We met the band members and learned their story to date, plus got inside their interesting brand of ‘60s-rooted experimental music. We heard tracks from the group’s self-titled CD, and the guys brought instruments and performed three songs live as well. Along the way, we debuted new songs from Royal Benson and Justin Garman, we updated “Local Music News,” reviewed Awkward Silence’s Break CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and dug out a 1999 song by Coil from the archives for a “Local Music Flashback.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

HELLO, VIXEN – “Grandpa’s Medicine”
GANISTER – “Saving Grace”
THE SUNFLOWER SPECTACLE – “Jetplane”
ROYAL BENSON – “Red Maple”
THE SUNFLOWER SPECTACLE – (untitled song) (performed live on the air)
THE LAMPSHADES – “Scotland”
THE SUNFLOWER SPECTACLE – “Clouds Look Painted”

HOUR TWO:

CHRIS VIPOND AND THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “Be”
APPALACHIAN TRANSLATOR – “Who Are Them”
THE SUNFLOWER SPECTACLE – “Picture Show” (performed live on the air)
AWKWARD SILENCE – “Clap for Alaska”
THE SUNFLOWER SPECTACLE – (untitled song) (performed live on the air)
COIL – “Hubba, Nubba, Wubba Monkey” (1999, Local Music Flashback)
THE SUNFLOWER SPECTACLE – “I’m a Ghost…No, I’m a Monster”
JUSTIN GARMAN – “Walk Aways” (performed live at Satori Gallery, Johnstown 1/30/09)

On our next program, we’ll be joined by members of Cambria County rockers Nitekast! We’ll find out what’s new with the guys and gal, plus hear songs from their new Cold Fusion CD. We’ll also hear from other area bands, update “Local Music News,” dig into the archive for another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Ruder Than You’s Creation Sounds CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner!” Nitekast visits the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night at 8 PM!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

MAY 23 – MYCENEA WORLEY
MAY 30 – MEMORIAL DAY SPECIAL
JUNE 6 – THE HOPE FALLACY
JUNE 13 – “DAY OF ROCK” BENEFIT PREVIEW
JUNE 20 – FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL
NOV. 7 - SYNESTHESIA

In Local Music News…

A legendary name in the Clearfield County music community has passed away. Edgar A. Bud Moore passed away last Monday, April 26, at age 91. Moore was a cornerstone in music not only in Clearfield County, but throughout the country. He founded the American Folk Musicians music union that is still in existence today with state headquarters in Connecticut. He presented a faith-based radio program, “Cells of Christ,” which aired for 30 years. During the 1950s, he hosted his own music television show that aired on WFBG-TV in Altoona. Along with his television career, he and his band, Bud Moore and His Hillsdale Hillbillies, provided nearly 1,000 broadcasts over numerous radio stations in Pennsylvania and New York. Along with his sons’ band, the Moore Brothers, and his band the Hillsdale Hillbillies, Bud Moore entertained audiences for over 75 years throughout Pennsylvania and surrounding states.

Pittsburgh R&B crooner Billy Price is releasing a new combination live CD and DVD set on DixieFrog Records. Live on Stage documents two nights of live performance in France from last May featuring Price and French guitarist Fred Chapellier, recorded during Price’s tour in support of his Night Work studio CD with the French guitarist.

Cambria County-based hair-band rockers Sunset Strip have officially added Altoona guitar virtuoso Tom Brown to their roster. Tom recently played with Crow In The Snow, as well as former area bands Strickly Wicked and Anaconda.

The band Flatline is no more. The group, featuring most of the former Tie Down roster and former Radiofuel singer Jim Veasey, have gone their separate ways, only months after just forming last fall.
