Is this bass better with or without pickguard?

Also, any tips for making these look less like ass?

I'm using a dremel, and its really freaking hard to get everything to be straight and not have little notches in it.

I'd like to do a 45° bevel on it, but I practiced on a piece of scrap and it just makes it look even more home made because the middle layer is all wavy.
