Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 22 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we revisited the show's mailboxes to check out new local and regional recordings that have arrived recently. As a result, we debuted a number of new songs, including tunes from Dan Stonerook, Tukurpa, Black Ridge, One of the Bigs, Laika the Astro-Hound, Nag Champions, Jon Smith's Voyages and Into the Storm! We also updated "Local Music News," dug a 1998 song from The Big'Uns from the archive for this week's "Local Music Flashback," stepped WAY "Across State Lines" to hear music from Sweden-based independent horror rockers Ghowl, and reviewed Wings That Buzz's Every Pretty Thing CD in "The Professor's CD Corner."

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

ZACH WADE & THE GOOD GRIEF - "Halfway Man"
MATT OTIS & THE SOUND - "Make"
DAN STONEROOK - "The Storm"
DOUG IRWIN - "The Bridges That I Burn"
TUKURPA - "Angel"
NITRO - "Uranium"
BLACK RIDGE - "Beneath the Sun"
BEAUTY SLAP - "Wopdewop"
ONE OF THE BIGS - "Teenage Nightmare"
JR WOLF - "Rastafari Cowboy"
LAIKA, THE ASTRO-HOUND - "Died at Five"

HOUR TWO:

WHISKEY BURN - "Drink All Day"
SOURMASH - "Flesh and Bone"
NAG CHAMPIONS - "Coffee and Cannibis"
WINGS THAT BUZZ - "Transition Is the Mission"
JON SMITH'S VOYAGES - "Excuse Me"
THE BIG'UNS - "Pa Chaw" (1998, Local Music Flashback)
GHOWL - "Meat" (Across State Lines)
SMALL TOWN HORROR SHOW - "Fearless"
INTO THE STORM - "Shuffle"
NEXT TO NONE - "The Edge of Sanity"

On our next program, we will resurrect a special we haven't done for a while. The "Made It to the Majors" Special will spotlight Pennsylvania-based bands and artists - past and present - who "chased the grail" and made it to the next level of the music business by getting signed by a major recording label! We'll hear music from some performers who have since become well-known and famous such as Halestorm, Breaking Benjamin, Live and Fuel; And we'll also hear from a few performers whose time in "the majors" was brief and who did not become household names. And we will spotlight a young band currently signed with Century Media Records - the Lehigh Valley's Next to None - by reviewing their A Light in the Dark CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 5 (Super Bowl Sunday) - Ladies of Local Music Special
MAR. 5 - Millennium Music Conference Recap
MAR. 12 - Millennium Drawing Winner (to be announced)

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

Bands and artists wanting to submit news items for "Local Music News" may email their news to homegrownrocker@gmail.com. Indicate "MUSIC NEWS" in the subject heading!

Bands and artists interested in having music aired on the show are invited to send their broadcast-quality recordings to: Magnum Broadcasting, 315 South Atherton Street, State College, PA 16801; ATTN: Jim Price/Homegrown. Or drop the recordings off at the station during regular business hours, Monday-Friday 9 AM – 5 PM. You can also email digital song files or inquiries about the show to homegrownrocker@gmail.com.

In Local Music News...

Guitarist Chris DellaPorta has announced that he is stepping away from Harrisburg-based southern rock band Smokin' Gunnz after a twelve-year run. Chris cited personal and career reasons for the move.

A benefit show to help the family of a member of the area hardcore music scene will happen on Saturday, January 28 at The Anvil in Altoona. The benefit for the family of Jay Champeno will start at 6 p.m., and feature performances from the bands Menace, Dementor, No Good Deed and Deadside. The show is all ages, and donation at the door is $10 per person. Proceeds will help out the Champeno family with medical expenses; Jay was recently hospitalized for an extended period of time with a blood infection and other issues.

And we at the "Homegrown Rocker" extend speedy get well wishes to Pennsylvania Musician Magazine editor Robin Noll, who has been logging some hospital time recently.
