Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the March 12 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

During last month's 21st annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, the "Homegrown Rocker" again made a dropbox available at the conference trade show, where participating bands and performers were invited to submit their recordings for airplay consideration on the program. At the close of the business conference, one recording was randomly selected, and that band or artist won a guest interview and appearance on this week's show! The winner of this year's drawing was Norfolk, Virginia-based singer, songwriter and performer Mike Lawson (www.mikelawson.com)! So this week, we met Mike and learned about his musical world - his beginnings, his inspirations and his music! And we heard several songs from Mike's first solo album released last year, Lie Here With Me! Along the way, we featured more music from bands and artists who appeared at this year's Millennium Music Conference. We heard music from Philadelphia-based performers Cubbage and the Chris Paterno Band, and stepped "Across State Lines" to hear music from Indiana's The Indigos, New York-based performers The Vine Brothers, Generations and The Foxfires. We dug into the archive for a 2001 tune from Harrisburg's Dead 50's for our "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Matt Pless' Tumbleweed, The Bus Stop E.P. and Other Songs CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

SHERRI MULLEN - "Worth Dying For"
MYCENEA WORLEY - "Siren"
MIKE LAWSON - "Old Train Car"
THE INDIGOS - "So Fly"
MIKE LAWSON - "Lie Here with Me"
THE VINE BROTHERS - "The Well"
MIKE LAWSON - "Welcome You Home"
GENERATIONS - "Katrina Blues"
THE FOXFIRES - "Soaring Stones"

HOUR TWO:

NATE MYERS - "Porch Light"
ROGER HAMMER - "Allegheny"
MIKE LAWSON - "What Are You Waiting For?"
MATT PLESS - "Talkin' Information Blues"
MIKE LAWSON - "Reconnect"
DEAD 50s - "Heck of a Guy" (2001, Local Music Flashback)
MIKE LAWSON - "Charlottesville"
THE TWINDOWS - "The Industry"
CUBBAGE - "Beautiful Night"
THE CHRIS PATERNO BAND - "Unfaithful"

Since our next program falls on St. Patrick's Day weekend, we'll let the area music scene get its Irish up with our annual "St. Patrick's Day Special!" We will spotlight the area bands and artists who bring Irish and Celtic twists to their style and sound! We'll be breaking out music from such names as Full Kilt, Tree, Dead Irish Blues, Lucky Lad Green, Kilmaine Saints, Barleyjuice and many more! We'll visit the archive for an Irish-themed "Local Music Flashback," and step "Across State Lines" to hear music from an out-of-state independent Irish-themed band or artist! So heat up some leftover corned beef and cabbage or pour yourself a bowl of Lucky Charms, sliver off some Irish Spring soap and listen to the "Homegrown Rocker" St. Patrick's Day Special!

Upcoming guests and specials include:

MAR. 5 - Millennium Music Conference Recap
MAR. 12 - Mike Lawson (Millennium Drawing winner)
MAR. 19 - St. Patrick's Day Special (local Irish music)
APR. 2 - Psycho Prophecy

A new major summer music festival will debut in the region in July. The inaugural Karoondinha Music & Arts Festival will happen at Penn's Cave near Centre Hall from July 21 through 23. More than 80 bands and artists will perform at the festival; early names announced to perform include John Legend, The Roots and the X Ambassadors, with more names to be announced soon. For more information about the festival, visit the website www.karoondinha.com.

The Spin Doctors have been announced as one of the headliners for the upcoming Happy Valley Music Fest in June. Rebranded from the event's former name of Summer's Best Music Fest, the Happy Valley Music Fest will happen in downtown State College on Friday and Saturday, June 2 and 3. The Spin Doctors will headline Friday's festival on the Garner Main Stage, while local favorites Velveeta will perform on the Garner Side Stage. More performers will be announced soon. For more information about this year's festival, visit the website www.happyvalleymusicfest.com.

There is sad news to report from the Pittsburgh music scene, as one of Pittsburgh's most respected rock guitarists, Pete Rossi, passed away unexpectedly on March 3 at age 47. Pete played guitar in numerous Pittsburgh-based bands over the past three decades, including names such as Sanxtion, Van Halen tribute act Meanstreet, Black Sabbath tribute act Black Sunday, Led Zeppelin tribute group Bled Zeppelin, and most recently, Michigan-based power metal group Reverence. Pete also issued a couple of solo albums, To the Moon and Back By Noon and 2014's The Brain Eating Amoeba.
