Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 30 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week's show was the one your show host was eagerly waiting for! Based on a recurring segment from the "Second City Television (SCTV)" late-night comedy series in the 1970s/80s, we introduced the first-ever "Homegrown Rocker" take on the "Fishin' Musician!" The original SCTV segment, hosted by the late John Candy in the role of 'Gil Fisher,' featured famous musicians and bands being interviewed by 'Gil' with a fishing or hunting trip serving as the backdrop. For our edition, your show host and area bluegrassers Mama Corn recorded this week's conversation while casting fishing lines into a fishing pond in remote southern Huntingdon County. By the time all was said and done, we found out the latest Mama Corn happenings, played several tracks off the group's new CD Live and Learn, and the group's banjo man, Jeremy Nelson, hooked a two-foot long lunker catfish! (Pictures of this fish can be seen on the Qwik-Rock Facebook page.) Along the way, we also debuted a new song from Sterling Koch, updated "Local Music News," dug a 1994 live track from Bob Hideycat & the Groovy Boots from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," and reviewed Bill Deasy's Timeless Things CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!" It was a whopper of a show, and a clear-cut keeper! Expect a sequel in the summer of 2018!

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

NOBODY'S HEROES - "Blood on the Banjo"
DOUG FORSHEY & CHRIS STRAIT - "Skeleton Man"
MAMA CORN - "Live and Learn"
STERLING KOCH - "Unconditional"
MAMA CORN - "Nobody Died"
BOB HELBIG - "Campfire Coffee"
MAMA CORN - "In the High Rise"
BISCUIT JAM - "When I'm Gone"

HOUR TWO:

BLACK CAT MOAN - "Medicine Man"
NAG CHAMPIONS - "The Jar"
MAMA CORN - "Sing!"
BILL DEASY - "The Night Before"
MAMA CORN - "The Crow"
BOB HIDEYCAT & THE GROOVY BOOTS - "Amazing Grace" (live) (1994, Local Music Flashback)
MAMA CORN - "Goodbye Comfort Home"

For our next program, we'll return to the mailboxes to check out some more new local and regional recordings that have arrived in recent weeks, so get ready to hear a lot of new music! We will also update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, step "Across State Lines" to hear music from an independent band or artist from outside Pennsylvania, and review 13 Saints' Crushing Copper CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

AUG. 20 - Fast-Forward Special (Area Musicians Then and Now)
SEPT. 10 - Matt Otis & the Sound
SEPT. 17 - Fyre
OCT. 15 - Lady

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

In Local Music News...

Live music will again be part of the fifth annual Bri's Rock N Ride event, which takes place on Sunday, August 20 to raise money for Autism Solutions. Organized by Brian Gates, the ride - which is open to motorcycles, cars and trucks, starts at 12 noon at Barnhart's in Altoona, and ends at La Ferme Rouge near Patton, where Cottonmouth and Phil McCaulley will perform the music. Pre-registration is $20 if paid before August 13, and $25 the day of the event. For more information, visit the website www.brisrocknride.com.

A new area country band is ready to hit stages in August. RailTowne features former members of the Adam Ernst Band, Bad Daze and Hello, Vixen. The group will make their onstage debut on August 19 at Davey's Lounge in Hastings as part of a benefit show to help out area cancer patient Steve Price.

The area music scene recently mourned the passing of a longtime bass player from the Altoona area music scene. Pat Colyer passed away on July 11 in Daytona Beach, Florida from kidney failure. He was 58. Pat played bass for several popular Altoona area bands in the late 1970s and 1980s before relocating to Florida. Some of the groups he was involved with included The Toyz, the Rolling Rockers and The Videos.
