Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 27 edition of Q94's weekly local music program, "The Backyard Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WBXQ 94.3.

Thanks to our guest via phone this week, Sterling Koch, the singer, steel guitarist and ringleader of eastern PA-based blues trio 61 South (www.myspace.com/61southblues). Sterling told us the story of 61 South, which returns him to playing the blues. We learned about the group, and heard songs from 61 South’s just-released self-titled debut CD. We also debuted new songs from Jimmy Adler and the Jason Martinko Revue, updated Local Music News, and reviewed Don Hughes’ self-titled CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” (The review can be read in the “Backyard Rocker” section of the message board area on Q94’s website, www.wbxq.com.)

Here is this week’s playlist:

HOUR ONE:

MICHAEL REICH – “Wireless”
ZUPE & NICHOLS – “Caterpillar”
61 SOUTH – “Let’s Work Together”
KUN-TAJUS – “Rollin’ Ramblin’ Man”
61 SOUTH – “12 Gates to the City”
JERRY HAINES – “On My Mind”
61 SOUTH – “Mean Old World”

STERLING KOCH – “Serve Somebody”
61 SOUTH – “Blues Have Got to Go”

Next Sunday night, our guests via phone will be Cambria County rockers Nitekast. We’ll meet the updated edition of Nitekast and find out the group’s latest happenings, plus hear songs from their forthcoming new CD, The Beginning and the End. We’ll also hear music from other area bands and artists, and review another new local/regional CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” Nitekast returns to the “Backyard Rocker,” next Sunday night!

In Local Music News…

Band break-ups top our look at Local Music News.

Two prominent Harrisburg area bands have split up. Deja Vudoo has announced their break-up effective immediately due to internal differences, and the group has cancelled its remaining shows. Harrisburg progressive/experimental rockers A Utopian Skyline have announced their break-up as well, due to creative differences. The group’s guitarist and singer, Aaron Miller, will begin performing with the group The Drama Club at the end of August.

An update on the band G211…We previously reported that the group had changed their name to Mia Mafia after replacing guitarist Dale Hart with former N.Y.N.E. guitarist Chris Lee. Subsequently, Dale Hart has reunited with G211’s original drummer and bassist, Tony Tamburini and Chris Gallagher respectively, and the three musicians are continuing on under the name G211.

Williamsburg-based heavy metal rockers Condemned Existence have announced that former Amystika bassist Corey Colledge has taken over the bass position in the group.

And according to show organizer Mickey Luckenbaugh, there will be an 18th annual “End Of Summer Jam” benefit concert for Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. Details are still coming together regarding this year’s benefit, but the likely date for the event will be Sunday, August 24, with the concert location, performing bands and other details to be announced soon. We will pass along those details on Q94’s “Backyard Rocker” as they become available.
