Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 16 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

With no guests this week, we took the opportunity to clean out the mailbox and get caught up on new recordings that arrived at “Homegrown Rocker” headquarters in recent weeks. We debuted a ton of new tunes, giving first spins to numbers by Element Of Surprise, Nick Finochio, Victory In Heaven Blues Band, Mycenea Worley, Ted McCloskey, Shift Seven, Four Day Crawl, Doppler Affect, Postal, Pseudo-Ano, Deadshot and Sound Of Silence. In addition, we updated Local Music News, and backtracked to 1987 to feature a song by Lyssa for a Local Music Flashback. And we reviewed not one, but TWO CD’s in the “Professor’s CD Corner” this week, exploring Gina Riggio’s Ultraviolet Catastrophe during the first hour, and the Charlie Wheeler Band’s Highway Run CD in the second hour. Indeed, it was maximum local music and on the “Homegrown Rocker!”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

DIRTY DOGZ – “Situation”
EMILY’S TOYBOX – “I’m the Bomb”
ELEMENT OF SURPRISE – “Holding on to Nothing”
NICK FINOCHIO – “Not All That Bad”
MYSTERYTRAIN – “What Would It Take” (performed live at Penn State 4/18/09)
GINA RIGGIO – “Body”
VICTORY IN HEAVEN BLUES BAND – “Rumble-In”
FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Keep On Rockin’”
MYCENEA WORLEY – “100 Days”
TED McCLOSKEY – “The Ceiling Staring Back”
SHIFT SEVEN – “The Brink”
FOUR DAY CRAWL – “Gunga Din on the Rock & Roll Hiway”

HOUR TWO:

CLINT CAROTHERS & FRIENDS – “Marseilles”
DINGLEBERRY SHORTCAKE – “Take Your Clothes Off”
DOPPLER AFFECT – “One Last Nail”
CHARLIE WHEELER BAND – “My Mama Cried”
POSTAL – “All I Want”
LYSSA – “Under Attack” (1987, Local Music Flashback)
PSEUDO-ANO – “Ompa Raven”
APPALACHIAN TRANSLATOR – “False Alarm”
DEADSHOT – “Jawbreaker”
SOUND OF SILENCE – “Can’t Find It”
THE EMBALMED – “Compelled By Hoof and Horn”
SPIRIT LOST – “Mistrust”

This Sunday night, we will turn our attention to the local heroes of the six strings on the next installment of the “Guitar Heroes of Local Music Special!” We’ll spotlight some of the talented axeslingers of the local and regional music scene, including names like John McKelvey, Felix Kos, John Charney, Jason Feathers and many more. We’ll also celebrate the memories of local guitar greats Jeff Wallack and Eric Kelly via Local Music Flashbacks, and update Local Music News. Celebrating local guitar heroes on the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

SEPT. 13 – SAMARA
SEPT. 20 – MATT SHEEDY (new start time 9 PM, see below)
SEPT. 27 – STERLING KOCH (V.I.H. BLUES BAND)
OCT. 3 – (NO SHOW DUE TO STEELERS FOOTBALL)
OCT. 11 – HOMEGROWN ROCKER 1ST ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL

With football season arriving, Rocky 104.9 will again be broadcasting Pittsburgh Steelers football games this year, and as a result, the “Homegrown Rocker” will be airing an hour later through the season, from 9 to 11 PM, beginning September 20. And due to Steelers Sunday night contests, the program will not air on October 3 or November 29.

For regular updates on what is happening on the area music scene, pay a visit to Rockpage (www.rockpage.net). Rockpage features band links, a message board, "Homegrown Rocker" updates, the online 'zine publication "The Final Cut," and other local music scene information.

Bands and artists interested in having music aired on "The Homegrown Rocker" are invited to send their broadcast-quality recordings to: WRKY Radio, One Forever Drive, Hollidaysburg, PA 16648; ATTN: Jim Price. Or drop the recordings off at the station during regular business hours, Monday-Friday 9 AM - 5 PM. You can also email me with inquiries about the show at profjp@rocky1049.com.

In Local Music News…

A popular local band from two years ago is reforming. 9 Planet Tour has announced that they are reforming. The new roster of the group finds singer Erika Marino joining forces with local power trio 7th Gear, featuring her two bandmates Brendon Burns on guitar and vocals and bassist Kelly Montgomery, plus Randy Servello on drums. The new incarnation of 9 Planet Tour will make their official debut next month during the Roar In The Mountains motorcycle rally kickoff party at the Altoona Ramada.

Flight 19 has lost a crew member. Bassist Tim Kelly recently stepped off “Party Plane,” and Scott Imler takes over bass duties in the group.

Middletown singer, songwriter and guitarist Sherri Mullen has announced that she is starting work on a new CD with her son, Shane. Sherri and Shane began performing as an acoustic duo last year. The new CD is expected out early next year.
