Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the August 30 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM.

Once again, we spent this program getting acquainted with some new music that arrived at “Homegrown Rocker” headquarters in recent days. We debuted new tunes from Crux, Matt Sheedy, Bill Deasy, the Kelly Bell Band, Wolfe, Matt Otis, The Hope Fallacy, Gypsy Piano Blues, Ben Hardt and His Symphony, Brad Yoder, Halestorm, Skyfall and Samara. In addition, we updated Local Music News, reviewed Days Before Tomorrow’s The Sky Is Falling CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner,” and ventured back to 1991 to hear a tune by Blaz-On for a Local Music Flashback.

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “False Flags”
NITEKAST – “Where the Devil Sleeps”
CRUX – “Chillin’ Out”
FLIGHT 19 – “Crank It Up”
MATT SHEEDY – “From the Beginning”
BILL DEASY – “The Miles”
KELLY BELL BAND – “Statesboro Blues” (live)
WOLFE – “Stranger Blues”
MATT OTIS – “Padlocked Door”
THE HOPE FALLACY – “Caroline St.”
GYPSY PIANO BLUES – “Never Know What Love Is”

HOUR TWO:

BEN HARDT AND HIS SYMPHONY – “Come On, Come On”
BRAD YODER – “Superhero”
HYBRID ICE – “Shining Star”
DAYS BEFORE TOMORROW – “Survival”
HALESTORM – “Love/Hate Heartbreak”
BLAZ-ON – “Feather In A Halo” (1991, Local Music Flashback)
SKYFALL – “Bullet Holes”
LIES, INC. – “Blink of an Eye”
SAMARA – “Devil’s Dance”
FEDUP – “Been to Heaven”

Our next program will be more of the same, as we hear more songs from recordings that arrived in recent weeks. We’ll debut more new tunes, update Local Music News, feature music from a past band for a Local Music Flashback, and review another new local CD or two in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” More maximum local and regional music on the “Homegrown Rocker” this Sunday night!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

SEPT. 13 – SAMARA
SEPT. 20 – MATT SHEEDY
SEPT. 27 – STERLING KOCH (V.I.H. BAND)
OCT. 4 – (NO SHOW DUE TO STEELERS FOOTBALL)
OCT. 11 – HOMEGROWN ROCKER 1ST ANNIVERSARY SPECIAL
OCT. 18 – DUBMISSIVE
OCT. 25 – WHITE WITCH (HALLOWEEN SPECIAL)

With football season arriving, Rocky 104.9 will again be broadcasting Pittsburgh Steelers football games this year, and as a result, the “Homegrown Rocker” will be airing an hour later through the season, from 9 to 11 PM, beginning September 20. And due to Steelers Sunday night contests, the program will not air on October 4 or November 29.

In Local Music News…

Sad news opens our look at Local Music News, as the Altoona community was stunned this past week by the sudden passing of Matt Vipond at age 32. Matt was involved in various community events and causes over the years; including helping to start up the summertime jazz concerts in downtown Altoona, and assisting with improvements for this year’s Lakemont Park Wing-Off’s. The season’s final Wing-Off this past Thursday at Lakemont Park was dedicated in memory of Matt, with donations and proceeds collected to help Matt’s surviving fiancée and two children. A special memorial benefit in Matt’s honor is being organized for September 18 in downtown Altoona. More details about the concert will be forthcoming.

Changes for local lady rockers Kitty Whip…On Saturday night, the group played their last show as an all-female line-up, as bassist Kimi and drummer Christi are both leaving the band. Replacing them are two members of Hi-Tyde, as Dale Nitti will play drums, and Ted Depto will play bass.

Pushing Red, the Clearfield-based band featuring former Kitty Whip singer Crystal “Cryssie” Mullins, has announced they are disbanding after nearly a year and a half on area stages.

After a seven-year run on area stages, Altoona-based metal rockers FedUP announced that they are calling it quits to pursue other projects.

The “Homegrown Rocker” extends speedy get well wishes to White Witch drummer Carl Berry, who is undergoing a series of abdominal surgeries. Carl’s medical issues follow bassist Bill Zimmerman’s hospitalization last winter due to spinal meningitis. White Witch are scheduled to be guests on the “Homegrown Rocker” during the show’s Halloween Special on October 25.

And Pittsburgh singer, songwriter and author Bill Deasy has been commissioned by the Altoona Railroaders Memorial Museum to write a series of non-fiction books about various aspects of the Pennsylvania Railroad’s illustrious history in western Pennsylvania. The first book, GG1 4913 – A Locomotive's Journey, hits stores September 1. Bill will be in town to promote the book, and will also be performing at the Railroaders Museum on September 16, opening for The Clarks.
