Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the January 31 edition of Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

Thanks to our guest this week, singer, songwriter and guitarist Conner Gilbert (www.myspace.com/connergilbertmusic.) We met and got acquainted with Conner and his musical story so far. We also checked out tunes from Conner’s debut CD, The View from Within, and two lucky listeners called in to win their own copies! And Conner brought his acoustic guitar and performed two songs live on the air! We debuted new tunes from Nate Myers & the Aces, the Saint Francis University World Drumming Ensemble, Rain Must Fall, Ted McCloskey, On The Run, Jakesway and Sandlot Heroes. We also updated Local Music News, dug a 2000 song by Clove from the archives for a “Local Music Flashback,” and reviewed The Sketties’ Up?!? Yes!! CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “The Lonely One”
NATE MYERS & THE ACES – “Beauty All Around”
CONNER GILBERT – “Since You’ve Been Away”
ST. FRANCIS UNIVERSITY WORLD DRUMMING ENSEMBLE – “Fanga” (live)
CONNER GILBERT – “The Prospect” (performed live on the air)
RAIN MUST FALL – “Six Years Later”
CONNER GILBERT – “Get Up”
CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND – “Yourself”

HOUR TWO:

TED McCLOSKEY – “Hopelessly Helpless”
ON THE RUN – “Eye for an Eye”
CONNER GILBERT – “Susannah”
THE SKETTIES – “So Safe”
CONNER GILBERT – “Lifesaver” (performed live on the air)
CLOVE – “Backseat” (2000, Local Music Flashback)
CONNER GILBERT – “When Will I Ever See You Again”
JAKESWAY – “Quarter Life Crisis”
SANDLOT HEROES – “So”

This Sunday night, we know what we’re up against from the sporting world. The big football game. In deference to the wives and girlfriends “widowed” by their men glued in front of television sets for the game, we feature the “Super Bowl Widows’ Special,” where we spotlight the women of the local and regional music scene. We’ll feature two hours of tunes from the ladies who sing, play guitars, basses, drums and other instruments on area stages and in the studio! We’ll also update Local Music News, feature another “Local Music Flashback,” and review Karen and Amy Jones’ Daphne in Winter CD in the “Professor’s CD Corner!” The “Super Bowl Widows’ Special” edition of the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night at 8 PM!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

FEB. 14 – LOVE STINKS SPECIAL (LOCAL MUSIC BREAK-UP SONGS)
FEB. 28 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE RECAP SPECIAL
MAR. 7 – JACKSON MONSOUR
MAR. 14 – KAJ
MAR. 21 – MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE CONTEST WINNER

In Local Music News…

A former Johnstown area church is being converted into an arts and music facility. The former St. George's Serbian Orthodox Church in Cambria City is transforming into the Venue of Merging Arts (VOMA). Spearheaded by Johnstown musician, artist and native Adam Mundok, the venue will soon house a recording studio, and present art exhibits and performances by aspiring artists and musicians. A benefit jazz-themed concert to assist with the restoration efforts will take place at Ace's Lounge next Saturday, February 6 at 8 PM, and will feature performances from Little Big Band with Bob Bretz and Don Aliquo's Quartet. Tickets to that event are $10 advance for artists and students, or $20 at the door.

Johnstown-based Johnny Cash tribute band Ole 97 has announced their new line-up, replacing three former members who split off to form the new band The Runaways. The updated roster of Ole 97 includes remaining member and lead singer Randy Hunter in the Johnny Cash role, joined by singer Charlene Boldin in the June Carter role, lead guitarist Clinton Erb, rhythm guitarist Jeff Erb, bassist Andy Heinze and drummer Paul Carpenter. The new line-up has shows scheduled through early spring at various Cambria and Somerset County venues, and will perform the kickoff to the concert season at Johnstown's Roxbury Bandshell on Memorial Day weekend in May.

Johnstown hard rockers Pound have announced the addition of former Rennis bassist Steve Stull to their line-up.

In 2007, State College’s Ted McCloskey recorded a song called "The Last Independent Record Store." The store that inspired that song, City Lights Records in State College, is now gone. The last independent record store in State College, City Lights closed its doors on Saturday, after 25 years in business. According to store operator Greg Gabbard, City Lights was closing due to increasing economic hard times and the changing face of the music industry, as more people are purchasing their music online rather than in CD and record stores. City Lights offered a diverse selection of new and used CD's, vinyl albums and 45 RPM singles, cassettes, DVD's and more. They also sold recordings by local bands and artists.
