Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the May 23 edition of Rocky 99 and Rocky 104.9's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on WRKW-FM (www.rocky99.com) and WRKY-FM (www.rocky1049.com).

We always appreciate guests who log long mileage to appear on the program; thanks to Harrisburg’s Mycenea Worley (www.myspace.com/myceneaworley) for doing the roadtrip westward on the Pennsylvania Turnpike to brighten up this week’s show! We got acquainted with Mycenea and learned her story, and heard tunes from her debut EP Love; and Mycenea brought her guitar along and played a couple live! Along the way, we introduced new tunes from Brad Yoder, Radiofuel and Nancy Micciulla; and reviewed Harold Taddy’s Jovana’s Bells CD in “The Professor’s CD Corner.” And after reporting the unexpected passing of Altoona area drumming favorite Steve McCulley on “Local Music News,” we remembered Steve by playing a 1997 song from one of his former bands, Korruption, for a “Local Music Flashback.”

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

FELIX & THE HURRICANES – “Issues”
GANISTER – “Villain Inside”
MYCENEA WORLEY – “I Love You”
BRAD YODER – “Any Day”
MYCENEA WORLEY – “The End” (performed live on the air)
RADIOFUEL – “Rain”
MYCENEA WORLEY – “Nothing Like I Thought”
NANCY MICCIULLA – “Crazy”

HOUR TWO:

THE BADLEES – “Part of a Rainbow”
O’LIVER SQUASH – “Up Above Down Below”
MYCENEA WORLEY – “100 Days”
HAROLD TADDY – “Romantic Seducer”
MYCENEA WORLEY – “Low” (performed live on the air)
KORRUPTION – “Sight” (1997, Local Music Flashback)
MYCENEA WORLEY – “Blessed Be”
TED McCLOSKEY – “The Ceiling Staring Back”

On our next program, we reprise our annual Memorial Day weekend tradition on the “Memorial Day Special!” We’ll celebrate past bands and artists of the area music scene for two hours, recalling some of the well-known and not-so-well-known bands of area music scene past. And during the show’s last half hour, we’ll pay homage to some of the musicians we’ve lost along the way. We celebrate local music history on the “Memorial Day Special” edition of the “Homegrown Rocker,” this Sunday night at 8 PM!

Forthcoming guests and specials include:

JUNE 6 – THE HOPE FALLACY
JUNE 13 – “DAY OF ROCK” BENEFIT PREVIEW
JUNE 20 – FATHER’S DAY SPECIAL
JULY 18 – THE BIG TIME
AUG. 8 – FAST FORWARD SPECIAL
SEPT. 5 – COVER SONG SPECIAL
SEPT. 19 – FULL KILT

In Local Music News…

The Altoona area music scene was shocked and saddened this past week with the unexpected passing of Steve McCulley. Steve died in his sleep early Thursday morning at the age of 38. Steve played drums in a number of Altoona area bands during the past two decades, including two of this area’s most prominent band names, Half Tempted and Korruption. Steve had been sidelined from Half Tempted with back and hip issues over the past three years, but was recovering and anticipating a return to the drum kit. Steve’s funeral service takes place Monday morning in Altoona.

Northern Cambria County rockers and recent “Homegrown Rocker” guests Nitekast have announced their new drummer. Renowned area drummer Mark Panek joins the group and replaces Josh Oaks. Josh made his final appearance with Nitekast this past weekend at the Rainbow Inn near Coalport.

And the deadline has been extended for songwriters wishing to enter the third annual Pennsylvania Heritage Songwriting Contest. The new deadline is May 31. The contest is being held in conjunction with the annual Smoked Country Jam Bluegrass Festival next month near Loganton; song entries must have a Pennsylvania theme, and the top three finishers win cash prizes and perform their songs at the Smoked Country Jam June 17-19. Visit www.smokedcountryjam.com or Google "PA Heritage Songwriting" for complete rules and entry information.
