Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the February 19 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we continued to explore the mailboxes to see what new recordings have arrived in recent weeks. This time, we spotlighted new recordings and tunes from bands and artists participating in the upcoming 21st annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, which takes place Feb. 23-25. We debuted new songs from Sunsets North, Yam Yam, The Smoked Meats, The Stonewall Vessels, The Twindows, GMO and The Ill Fated Natives. Along the way, we updated "Local Music News," dug a 1997 song by The Lodge Lizzards from the archive for a "Local Music Flashback," stepped "Across State Lines" to hear a song from Long Island, New York's Phil Firetog Trio, and reviewed The Whatleys' American Party CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

CELL 15 - "Chapter One"
PROGMIUM - "Invincible"
SUNSETS NORTH - "Summer Love"
THE WRECKERS - "Down Tonight"
YAM YAM - "Stardog"
ANDY MOWATT - "Bodhisattva"
THE SMOKED MEATS - "Black Belt in Aikido" (live)
MIXING NUMBERS WITH SOUNDS - "Haste"
THE STONEWALL VESSELS - "The Great Swindle"

HOUR TWO:

JIM DONOVAN & THE SUN KING WARRIORS - "Right in Front of Me"
CHRIS VIPOND & THE STANLEY STREET BAND - "Lonely Cells"
THE TWINDOWS - "The Industry"
THE WHATLEYS - "Broke Down (in Murdertown)"
GMO - "Rock and Roll"
THE LODGE LIZZARDS - "Letter to Michelle" (1997, Local Music Flashback)
PHIL FIRETOG TRIO - "Ball & Chain" (Across State Lines)
13 SAINTS - "Evel Knievel"
THE ILL FATED NATIVES - "Want Me Dead"
NATIVE ALLOYS - "Windsor Tie"

We will continue to provide maximum local and regional music on our next program, and again spotlight new recordings that have arrived in recent weeks. We will again update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, step "Across State Lines" to hear music from an independent band or artist from outside of Pennsylvania, and review Mama Corn's Live and Learn CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

MAR. 5 - Millennium Music Conference Recap
MAR. 12 - Millennium Drawing Winner (to be announced)

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

After disappearing for a year, the annual Pittsburgh Blues Festival is returning later this year under a slightly different name. The event is being re-christened the Pittsburgh Blues and Roots Festival, and will take place on July 22 and 23 at the Syria Shrine Center in Harmar near Pittsburgh. Early announced headliners for this year's return event will be Tinsley Ellis and Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors. Proceeds from the festival will benefit the Autism Society of Pittsburgh.

If you're a connoisseur of Martin Guitars or just guitars in general, an upcoming special event at Penn State Altoona may be just for you. The campus will present a showing of the short documentary film Ballad of the Dreadnought: A Musical Icon Turns 100. The movie will show at noon on Thursday, February 23 at the Misciagna Family Center for Performing Arts on the Penn State Altoona campus. The movie highlights the rise of the Martin Dreadnought guitar and celebrates its 100 years, plus features guest appearances from many famous musicians who have used the instrument. Following the film will be a special presentation by Martin archivist thingy Boak and Penn State Altoona professor Jerry Zolten, who both appear in the film. Admission to this event is free, and the public is welcome to attend.

The 21st annual Millennium Music Conference gets under way this Thursday evening, February 23, and continues through Saturday. This year's conference again will take place at the Central Hotel and Conference Center, Best Western Premier in Harrisburg. Conference weekend begins with a kickoff party on Thursday night at O'Reilly's Taproom in the host hotel, and continues Friday and Saturday with the daytime business conference and trade show, plus nightly showcase performances throughout the Harrisburg area by nearly 300 different bands and performers. Keynote speakers at this year's conference include Crobot singer Brandon Yeagley on Friday, and Chad Taylor of Live on Saturday. For more information about this year's Millennium Music Conference, visit the website www.musicconference.net.

On a sad note, the area music scene suffered the loss of a young talent this past week with the unexpected passing of Nicole Knepp-Lytle at age 30. "Nikki" was a singer who competed in the annual Crazy Fest Amateur Youth Talent Show in 2005, before she became the lead singer for the band Issues for a brief period. We at the "Homegrown Rocker" extend our heartfelt sympathies to Nikki's surviving family and friends.
