Hello Everyone,

Here is the recap of the July 16 edition of 105.9 Qwik-Rock's weekly local music program, "The Homegrown Rocker," which airs every Sunday night from 8 to 10 PM on Lion Country's Rock Station, 105.9 Qwik-Rock. The show can also be streamed via Qwik's website, www.1059qwikrock.com.

This week, we chatted with Pittsburgh rockers 13 Saints, in a conversation recorded on location at Mr. Toad's in downtown Greensburg. We met the band members and learned their story, and featured songs from their debut CD, Crushing Copper! Since one of the group's members is Ask A Stranger alumnus Dave Buzard, we dug out a 1991 tune from Ask A Stranger for this week's "Local Music Flashback!" And along the way, we debuted a new song from Kurt Blindly, updated "Local Music News," and reviewed The Commonheart's Grown CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Here is this week's playlist:

HOUR ONE:

TED McCLOSKEY - "A Stranger Rides Into Town"
YOUNG LUNGS - "Reset. Restart"
13 SAINTS - "Deep"
KURT BLINDLY - "Life Coach"
13 SAINTS - "Smile"
THE HAWKEYES - "Miracle Man"
13 SAINTS - "Mother May I"

HOUR TWO:

THE DIRTY CHARMS - "Love's So Cruel"
LEGENDARY HUCKLEBUCKS - "B-Movie"
13 SAINTS - "Evel Knievel"
THE COMMONHEART - "Aloysius"
13 SAINTS - "Genius"
ASK A STRANGER - "Starlight" (1991, Local Music Flashback)
13 SAINTS - "In My Head"

On our next program, we return to the mailboxes to check out new recordings that have arrived in recent weeks, meaning we will have lots of new music to debut! Along the way, we will update "Local Music News," dig a "Local Music Flashback" from the archive, step "Across State Lines" to hear a song from an independent band or artist from outside Pennsylvania, and review Marshmellow Overcoat's self-titled CD in "The Professor's CD Corner!"

Upcoming guests and specials include:

JULY 30 - Mama Corn ("Fishin' Musician" Special)
AUG. 20 - Fast-Forward Special (Area Musicians Then and Now)
SEPT. 10 - Matt Otis & the Sound
SEPT. 17 - Fyre
OCT. 15 - Lady

(All dates are subject to changes as circumstances warrant.)

Bands and artists wanting to submit news items for "Local Music News" may email their news to homegrownrocker@gmail.com. Indicate "MUSIC NEWS" in the subject heading!

Bands and artists interested in having music aired on the show are invited to send their broadcast-quality recordings to: Magnum Broadcasting, 315 South Atherton Street, State College, PA 16801; ATTN: Jim Price/Homegrown. Or drop the recordings off at the station during regular business hours, Monday-Friday 9 AM – 5 PM. You can also email digital song files or inquiries about the show to homegrownrocker@gmail.com.

In Local Music News...

Updating a story we reported last week, the date has been changed and finalized for a benefit show to help out the surviving family of area musician Colin McAtee. The bass player for Centre County heavy metal group It Is Written, Colin passed away unexpectedly on July 2 while the group was performing concert dates in Florida. The benefit will take place on July 22 at McGarvey's in Altoona. The "Metal for Melvin" benefit will start at 8 p.m., and feature performances from the bands Awaken From Ruin, Black Sun, Klockwick, Burnicide and Chrysadra. Donation at the door will be $10, with proceeds helping Colin's family with final expenses.

A benefit for veterans will take place at the Duncansville VFW early next month. The Freedom Fighter Outdoors event will take place on Saturday, August 5 starting at 4 p.m. Proceeds benefit Freedom Fighter Outdoors, an organization that sends injured veterans from across the country on hunting and fishing trips at no cost to the veteran. The event will feature performances from Dwane Edmiston, Steve Todaro Band, This Albatross and Reboot. Donation is $10 per person. There will also be giveaways, a silent auction, a bake sale, and food and refreshments.

Former members of local bands Kyx and Altoona's Inside Out have formed a new group. Kicked In features Paul Dixon and Jeff Hollingshead from Inside Out, Jim Walstrom and Terry Wills from Kyx, plus drummer Lisle Weaver from The Kick. The new group will entertain during Altoona's first National Night Out Against Crime celebration, happening on Tuesday evening, August 1, at downtown Altoona's Heritage Plaza.
