Has anyone here used them at all? I know that the old MT4's kicked serious butt, but perhaps they were too costly?

I've done a lot of subwoofer designs in my day, and always thought that those things were pure genius. 4 18"speakers in a 3' x 3' x 3' box. But I haven't seen them in a while. Where there problems?

I've seen one in Greensburg a while back and Jessie Mullhullon uses one in differnt forms.
From what I've found and or seen the boxes sell for around 1500.00 to 2000.00 a piece.
Too get these things running good your looking at around 10,000 watts of power in their smallest form.
I'm not sure but I'd quess that the control and coverage patterns of todays line array systems probably sealed the fate of the ground stacked Mt4's.
I did a little checking a few weeks ago into the design of the low boxes
and they looked suprisingly simple.
This is a system which has been on and off of my wish list for years.

I had a pair of MTL-1s and MTH-1s (the MT-1 system). This system rocks for bigger venues and outdoors, but is still very portable. Its a fairly long throw setup, so you wouldn't want to use it in smaller venues. Solid, flat response down to 50hz, but it rolls off quickly below 50hz. Super clean thump.

This system needs lots of power to perform well--minimum 5000w, but optimally 9000W.

EV doesn't make the MT-1 system or the MT-4 system anymore. They now make a newer version of the MTL-1 called the MTL-1X that is loaded with EVX-180s. 1200Wrms with 101db (1w/1m) sensitivity for 132db max spl with 138db peaks from 50hz to 200hz.

Too bad Digibid.com went out of business. They had these up for auction all the time. I bought store demo pairs for $500/pair. Sold them for more than twice that.

I don't have any experience with the MT-4 systems.

I'm not sure if Greg Stager still uses his MT-2L clones or not. These were the half-sized version of the MT-4L, 2 DLX-18s shooting into the manifold. I don't remember what they sound like, but I know Greg, and he doesn't build junk. There's a guy running around in Johnstown that looks like Kid Rock that claims to have an MT-4 system. I've never seen or heard it.

I saw a Harrisburg band put 2 stacks of MT-4's in the old Sab's! Can you believe it? And a 10kw amp rack (albeit with half the amps turned off). It was overkill at it's finest. However, I haven't seen a system since, and that was about 1990.------->JMS
