Wal-Mart Worker Dies in New York ‘Black Friday’ Store Stampede

Nov. 28 (Bloomberg) -- A worker at a Wal-Mart in Long Island, New York, was killed when a throng of shoppers broke down the doors to the store early this morning and knocked him to the ground, according to local police and the company.

The event involved a temporary worker and was “a tragic situation,” Bentonville, Arkansas-based Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world’s biggest retailer, said in a statement. “The safety and security of our customers and associates is our top priority.”

At least four other shoppers were hurt in the melee at the Valley Stream store, about 13 miles (20 kilometers) east of New York City, Nassau County Police said in a statement. The injured include a 28-year-old pregnant woman who was taken to a nearby hospital for observation and three people who suffered minor wounds, police said.

The 34-year-old worker, who wasn’t identified by police, was knocked down by the crowd shortly after 5 a.m. local time and taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m., the police statement said. The county medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

The man was working for a temporary agency on the company’s behalf, Wal-Mart said in the statement. He was trying to hold back the crowd of about 200 people when he was trampled, the New York Daily News reported, citing witnesses. Shoppers continued to file into the store as emergency workers tried to save the man, the newspaper said.

Store Closed

The store was later closed by police, the Daily News said.

Other than the fact that many stores have some sales, I don't understand why people need to begin their Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving. Have we become so programmed as a society that we can't start shopping before Thanksgiving or the week after?

I don't blame Walmart in this instance, and I'm usually the pro-labor dude (comes with having Dr. McCollester as a prof at IUP). This is the fault of the consumer-frenzied, ego-centric people who couldn't think of anything but "I need to get to the sale rack." My favorite Simpsons Christmas episode is the one with Funzo, because it's such a true reflection of reality.

I avoid the stores, or driving in Altoona as much as I can help it during Thanksgiving weekend, because of the mad shopping rush.

I had to go to Wal-Mart today for a can of primer and some sand paper, and I was in and out in less than 5 minutes, beause I knew exactly what I wanted and the shortest path to get there.

Being inside of a store to me is the worst thing in the world, because of the massive amounts of idiots around me.
The only store that I find solace is the Music Emporium.

Of course it's a small store, but there's something about being around guitars that sets my mind at ease. The staff there are top notch as well, which only adds to things

Wow!! What a way to go...Wonder if Elmo Live was a factor in this tragedy? Anyway, it's all nonsense. Wal-Mart should compensate the poor hapless bastards family, seeing their holiday will be fucked up for years to come. How much do you wanna bet that they will still shop at Wal-Mart.

I'm not sure which is worse, the a-holes who would trample a guy for a Nintendo Wii, or the store that baits a-holes with 5 Nintendo Wii's per store, when the demand is 5000 per store. If there are so few of the damn things, sell them at the Nintendo Wii store, and price them accordingly. Also, if they can make 20 million Ipods, why can't they make 20 million Wii's?

I have never gone and cannot imagine going shopping in a huge crowd or rush of people at 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving,

but to each their own.

My ex-gf was one of those people who did that every year. She would wake up @ 2:30am and leave the house by 3:30 to grab the Friday morning paper (if she could find one!) to see where all of the "deals" were at.

These people start WAY earlier than 5am!

I'm like you Donna, I hate to shop, (unless it's for guitars) and I'd rather be @ home sleeping in on Friday morning.
I've seen and heard way too many horror stories to make me think otherwise!

This is rather sad a story. I can say that usually, the only time I go out on Black Friday is for a purely sadistic reason... I'm usually there with whomever else wants to go out. I'll help if I'm asked. But my usual main reason is simply to see what kind of chaos ensues. Black Friday is quite a sadistic "holiday". I've even given it the nickname "Anarchy Shopping Day", because that's what it is... It's anarchy with sales being the second point of order

It is tragic, however, that things would go that far. I've laughed seeing people get feisty over some piece of $20 junk that usually retails at $25, and in that sense, it can be rather amusing... But seriously, is that sale more important than someone's life? And what if they find out who was there, and who did it? Was that $5 worth taking another life in your hands, and the jail time that may ensue?

I'll move my thoughts to blame all stores for creating such mayhem on any given day. It's total bullshit that, as a society, we'll jump through rings of fire and wrestle with a bear just for a few $$$ off. Wal-Mart's just a principle example

I think if I'm out in the mess next year, I'm gonna bring a video camera just to show the anarchy that's been created by such a sale frenzy society. Go figure that something like this would happen on the year I don't feel like goin out, even for a laugh...

John, bringing a video camera is actually a good idea. That way you can sell the footage to the local news or even post the CHAOS on Youtube.

Anarchy is a pretty accurate term for it. I think my generation may be to blame. We were assailed with Saturday morning commercials that made us want EVERYTHING... by the mid 80's, they didn't just advertise toys on cartoons, the cartoons were of THE TOYS, like He-Man, Transformers, etc. We all grew up thinking you had to have lots of toys to be fulfilled. When I was little, most kids got a toy or two, and clothes. By the time I reached my teens, the average kid woke up to a roomful of gifts. Now, people are trampling others to make their kid or themselves happy for a few hours at most.

Exactly! It hasn't been just from Santa, either. The Easter Bunny also got into the commercial groove, but I put a screeching halt to it with my youngest. Christmas and birthday loot (and an occasional Guitar during the year

) is MORE than enough. He has been surviving receiving 'only'

candy on Easter.

Maybe it was just us po' kids, but I know I only ever got the same basket every year from my parents, er, the Bunny.

I recall just ONCE, my Aunt and Uncle (also my Godparents), gave me a chocolate Squirrel. (I wonder if that was the year I had led one into my house???

I saw someone said about Kmart... You know how they do it... If they have "X" amount of Wii's or whatever.... About 10-15 minutes before the store opens. They have tickets they give to the 1st "X" amount of people... If that is what they are after... That way there is zero rush at the door... Everyone knows where they stand... Simple, huh?? How do I know this? My wife is the manager of the Electronics Dept at our local Kmart for the past 10 years...

Wal Mart thrieves on the stupidity and craziness of the there customers. I'm not saying people that shop at Wal Mart are stupid. But when you whip people into a frenzy. Because you are promising them something you can't provide. Or make a contest of it... People throw there logic out the window... Fight or flight syndrome... Ya know... We all have it in us.

I saw a news report the other night. They said people were even stomping on the cops and people trying to help the poor dude... And that they'd review the tapes but it will be hard to pick one or 2 people out to fill charges... And once again Wal Mart will get away with murder...

I read that the man was killed wasn't trained to control crowds, he came from a temp agency and was working in maintenance. If that's true, Wal Mart is responsible for putting an untrained employee in charge of crowd control. However, Wal Mart didn't kill this man, the people that trampled on him did.

But if you are "charged" for insighting a riot and someone gets hurt or killed.... You can be charged for that offense as well. So, how does that make Wal-Mart not somewhat responsible???
