Discuss.

For me, it makes the elevator ride a little more relaxing.

First, when I hear a Muzak tune, it seems to stick with me all day. Not that it is a bad thing. However, I find it intresting and sometimes unusual that some tunes that have been done in Muzak style should never be done that way and I have heard hard rock songs converted to Muzak format. The bad thing there is that the Muzak version sticks in my head.

On a similar note (no pun intended), the Giant Eagle enormous supermarket in the Richland section of Johnstown pipes in normal music and at a very decent volume but I think it is cool that they play mostly rock tunes. I know from being a marketing person that playing upbeat songs will make the shoppers feel more upbeat and move about quicker and purchase more items. The slower, more mellow music would tend to make them move slower and feel more sluggish and less likely to buy. There is nothing like choosing your favaorite flavor of ice cream while singing along to White Wedding, which I have heard there along with other rock tunes.

I wonder if there's like a whole scene of session cats who get called in to play muzak releases. They've all jammed with each other throughout the years and there's like a Real Book of popular tunes, all arranaged in muzak style. The producer knows that they always get everything in one take, which keeps the profit margins high for when Target needs to buy more CDs for their collection.

I have heard recently that Muzak is in financial trouble and might go under. Thanks B. Hussien.

I'd say...

Watered down psuedo-smooth jazz arrangements, often of popular tunes, with heavy emphasis on cheesy synth melodies, smooth wind instrument lines, and absolutely NO dissonant note intervals or chords at all. Most of it is so safe and watered down that is would make Kenny G sound like Charlie Parker sitting in with the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Most often heard over the PA in dentists' offices and boutique department stores like the Bon Ton.

I remember in a guitar magazine once that it was basically session guys making a buck. I recently heard, "I was Made For Loving You" by Kiss done elevator-style at a store. I thought it was awesome! It was so cheesy, it was funny, like someone knew they would get a rise out of some Kiss fan in a gift shop.
I have to give those guys their due... those things usually are well-played, and arranging rock songs for trumpets and strings HAS to be difficult.--->JMS

You spelled Hussein wrong. You don't happen to have an anti-Obama billboard in your yard, do ya? :P

Actually, I think it would be a lot easier. Those cats are used to playing way harder stuff than rock and roll. However, you did say arranging, that may be a difficult task to get to sound the way you want it.
