BMG ending service, another sign of the changing times.

I have actually been thinking about this lately. I just ordered 4 CD's from BMG music service and got a really good deal. 4 CD's cost me a total of about $24. I thought, wow, that's even less than I could have bought these discs as digital downloads (amazon or itunes) and I get the physical media and artwork, etc. to keep. Now of course, I had to wait for the cd's to arrive in the mail and for a few extra bucks, I could have gotten the music immediately.

So today, I got this message in my e-mail.

We'd like to tell you about some upcoming changes to your membership.

BMG Music Service is being discontinued as of June 30, 2009.
That doesn't mean your music savings are coming to an end. Your savings can continue with our other service, yourmusic.com, where shipping is always free and there are no automatic shipments.

Here’s some important information regarding your current account:

* You will receive one more Featured Selection Announcement email from us.
* You will still be able to shop at soundandspirit.com through May 31, 2009.
* We have discontinued our Music Points program, effective January 31, 2009. You will be able to redeem your outstanding music points through April 30, 2009.
* You'll have through May 31, 2009 to redeem certificates or free CDs you've earned.

I couldn't help but think that at some point this type of music delivery service would be affected by the shift in popularity to digital downloads, just as a lot of "brick and mortar" business have ceased or shifted focus.

I was also thinking about this a few weeks ago. I was wondering if these services were still around. I remember getting my "free" CDs from Columbia House. It was a great way to get music that was ultimately a better deal than the record stores back when a CD was like $20.

I'm not one to stay in the "good ol' days," especially when it comes to technology, but I still like the idea of a physical format when it comes to music. Hell, when people are buying Ipods, I decided to go buy a record player and start collecting vinyl.

The new company that BMG formed is actually a much more simplified version of their services. If you want to purchase an entire single CD, the cost will be $6.99 (free shipping & handling) + state sales tax. Double CD's and box sets will cost more accordingly.

What is the name of the company now?

I generally buy my cd's from ebay or Metal Blade Records' online store.
I used to buy alot of cd's from Coconuts in the Wal-Mart plaza, but that place disappeared a few years ago.
