LAZERZ
We already have en_er_gy so we were thinking about adding lazerz.
Anybody using them for shows? Anyone have any imperial problems?
Any issues with class IIIa? IIIb & up?
Are there venues that ban them?

Thin Ice used them years ago... the laser output was above the level you'd get now in a lighting fixture, the light guy ordered a laser experiment kit dubbed "animal control experiment kit" whatever that meant. We tried several combinations, the most entertaining of which involved aiming it at a faceted crystal sphere, which split the beam in odd ways. Mostly, once people noticed it, they'd try to get it to shine in their eyes. We shelved it, not keen on a lawsuit.
Now, they have all sorts of whiz-bang laser lighting that is way cheaper, way safer, and much more impressive. Scream uses them occasionally, and it seems like the bigger the hall, and the higher up on a truss they are placed, the more impressive the show, particularly in smoky places (which is true of most lighting). I think you have to keep the rest of the lighting level down for it to really have the best effect, though.--->JMS

It seems the feds have cracked down on lazerz since 9/11.
The feds consider class IIIa safe for typical entertainment use, but that limits the output to 5mW. There are variations on wider beam diameter that allow for 10mW and split up beams that allow for 50mW. These are made by the usual names like Chauvet and American DJ and are FDA approved...however...
eBay has a whole slew of higher powered lasers that drop-ship direct from China that may or may not be FDA approved. I bought a 4 head laser that was already imported and was shipped from California. The ad said that it was FDA approved, but the manual says its a class IIIb which is supposed to require a license to import and possibly to own & operate.
Its really kewl: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8W4VUcuJ9Mg
Then there's the question of what the output really is. Like power amps, these can be rated in RMS, peak, average and who knows what and you really can't tell unless you actually measure it. Anybody have a lasermeter?
I'm a little nervous about using it for fear of Homeland Security showing up instead of the PLCE.

Yeah...maybe we should cover BOC's "Harvester Of Eyes".REDillon wrote:Aim for the eyes!!
2 things I found out about lazerz so far:
1. Red lasers (or any color but green) suck visually without lotsa fog.
2. Laser beams aren't effective in front of a lighted sign.

You should get like two 4 foot bongs to run your fog thru on stage!
Lazerz always remind me of revenge of the nerds when they're rocking out at he talent show. I wanna cover that song in the side effects. Need an electric Violin and a Keytar though.
