ship hijackings?

Post by mjb »

i'm haveing a hard time trying to figure out how these somali's in rubber boats are able to hi-jack these monster ships. i'd blow them mother fuckers out of the water. you'd have to be able to see them approaching you from miles and miles away. i'd pull out my rifle when i seen them comming and start shooting at them and when they're at the hull of the boat i'd be shooting straight down at them. seems pretty simple.

Word.

Unless they are pretending to be part of the 'coast guard' of that country...

Then you might be inclined to hold your fire :)

It'd be bad ass if they start installing torpedos on commercial ships.

miles off their coast.

this just in: american crew take back control of the ship. fuckin right!

overpowered a somalian? that should be pretty easy all you need is a good breakfeast

yea, aren't the samolians in rubber dinghy's? seems pretty simple... shoot a hole in the boat, the boat sinks, you don't get hijacked.

They were probably tolerant minded and didn't want to "hurt" anyone. It really didn't matter to them, they would probably rather have their ship taken and their lives taken before they look like hate mongers, by hurting these poor people in need.

It's the only reason I can think of. If it were my ship, they never would have gotten close.

Or perhaps they also realized the international shit storm that would have likely ensued if they engaged the pirates. Perhaps they didn't have weapons on board. Perhaps the captain didn't want to escalate a situation that may put his sailors' lives at more risk.

Check out my reply to you in the Islam thread, Robizzle. 8)

You see Paul, that's the problem today. Our soldiers have their hands tied behind their backs and are expected to fight. Back in the day, you took care of a threat, as quickly and efficiently as possible. Now you gotta radio in, wait, wait some more, verify, wait some more, and get the go ahead. These bitches should have been lit up as soon as they posed any kind of threat. I don't know about you, but remember the USS Cole? The action would have been justified. You know what they would do to these people in their own country if they tried taking a Somali boat? Probably would have cut their heads off in public.

The BBC's website has a section about the Somali pirate problem. This article is about how international rules and regulations and U.N. crap hamper the efforts to deal with the pirates.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/africa/7735144.stm

The latest reports are saying that the American crew may have retaken the ship.

My point exactly, we aren't allowed to do anything and it's bullshit. So, you know what the solution is? We should just stop foreign aid due to the piracy problem. That would really piss of the people of Somalia, maybe their people would actually do something about it then. Of course, who am I? Just one stupid person in central PA. My opinion means nothing.

Of that, I am glad. But welcome to the club :)

Should be allowed to defend themselves on the high seas, IMHO.

But cut off aid and you just created a fertile new recruiting ground. But instead of just letting the people get aid, they are told that their oldest sons must commit to a suicide bombing, or to becoming a pirate, or their families die or get no aid from us pirates and starve to death.

Way to go sport... Make that world bow to your might... Show them you are no better...

Oh don't get me wrong. I totally agree with you. If you engage in aggressive tactics on the high seas, you deserve to be sent to the bottom of the ocean. I'm saying that there may have been a myriad of reasons WHY the crew didn't engage the pirates, and speculation doesn't mean that one's necessarily correct about that reason.

From my understanding, the cruise ships themselves aren't allowed any lethal weapons on-board, and need to be escorted by military vessels.

That makes sense to me. Just look at the alternatives... would you want an armed cruise ship from another country docking in a US harbor?

As a result, it's up to the military of the nation whose waters the ships are in to secure the shipping lanes. This is all good until the ships are within the coastal waters of a country who doesn't care about their safety.

I can see why this FUBAR situation happened, but I can also see where a fix would be tricky to come up with and why there are so many regulations holding up a solution. In some situations you could probably end up with two countries conflicting, begun because of a conflict between a cruise ship and pirates.
... and then the wheel fell off.

This is also my understanding... armed ships are considered to be a threat, and will be fired upon by military ships from ANY country. The freighters can't carry such weapons if they want to do international business. Would you want a Liberian freighter full of Muslims pulling into New York Harbor with a 6-inch gun on top?
The pirates are criminals who never leave their area, and the Somalian coast is the "dark alley" because there is no Somali government, much less a navy to stop them. They use Soviet and US RPG's (gosh, where could they have gotten US arms?), and strike fast. I have read, however, that some ships are using improvised weapons like firehoses to swamp small boarding craft, and most simply speed up (small boats can go fast, but not as far, and for as long as big ships.
I wonder why they don't just do US Navy maneuvers there... Who'd stop them?--->JMS

how about just raising the ladder up on the side of the ship so they can't reach it.

isn't this how they are boarding the ships.

Actually, if we were a third world country in need to foreign aid and they came to help...yea, why not?

The ships that carry National flags are considered property or soventry of that country, an attack on that is considered an act of war. We have fought pirates before, sing the Marine Corps Ballad- from the shores of tripoli----Then look up the history and you'll find we killed them, trade was restored, the world moved on.

Wouldn't a couple of 12 gauge shot guns given to the crew be enough?

Maybe we should start using commercial submarines. That'd be even more bad ass than installing torpedoes! It wouldn't make much sense for the pirates to sink vessels with depth charge. :D
