Shoulda boughts: The ones that got away.

Post by songsmith »

I was just reading the "what band gear did you sell" thread, and wondered what some of the gear would that local guys had a chance to buy, but passed for some reason. I've had that conversation a lot over the years, as someone who works in a music store, but what are the toys that you let get away?

Mine?
Red Charvel Strat at Jarrett's. Wonderful guitar, it had 3 of the humbuckers that fit in a single-coil slot (Duncans, I believe), Sperzels, red paint even on the neck, very solid and well-built, a real road dog and it looked brand new.

'73 Gibson J-45. This one breaks my heart to think of it. Jim Mosey had a tobacco sunburst that practically crawled up into my lap. It had some checking on the front (a bonus for me, I LOVE personality) in just the right places, the action buttery, and the sound was loud and bottomy. He wanted $350, I had it in my g-damn pocket, and I walked out the door. That was 15+ years ago, and I still mourn. :) --->JMS

Jeff Wallack called me out of the blue one day when he worked at Jarret's. He said he just took a double neck exactly like mine on trade. He only wanted like $300 for it. I had no money, and at that time mine was still in pretty good condition. 20 years later mine is in serious need of an overhaul, so I've been trying to replace it. Here's one I found for sale. The guy said he's got bids around $3000

There has been quite a number of guitars, amps, etc. I passed up and wished I would have bought. I had two unbelievable deals I did not take because I did not have the money and my friend could not wait until I got paid because he already had other guitars on the way. One was a 25th Anniversary silver Stratocaster with a case for $375 that was only a couple months old at the time and hardly ever played. The second guitar was a black early 80's Stratocaster with a maple neck, custom designed pickups and an Anvil flight case all only about six months for $350. Both of these guitars are worth a lot of money now and would have been great investments.

Fortunately, a lack of self-control on gear has prevented this from
occuring all that much to me, but a Fender Jag, a nice burgundy
335 for a ridiculously low price, and an old Intermark are among
those missed opps.

Sure there were others, but these stand out.

I was playing bass for Crazy Louie B. in the early 80's and he was playing ( quite out of character for him ) a 1963 tobacco sunburst Gibson Dot 330 that was the sweetest guitar I have ever played. In one of his more lucid moments he offered to sell the guitar to me for $300 "before I bite the damn thing". Econmic conditions and stupidity prevented me from purchasing the guitar.

Almost bought a pedal steel guitar once. I guess if I would have bought it, I'd at least have learned to play one a little bit.
