hardest to come by, guitar/bass/drummer?
Generally speaking, what is the hardest spot to fill?
I was at a blackout show a while back and the bassplayer (skull) said
"Your learning the guitar ey? Stop while your ahead and pick up a bass.I can swing a pool stick in here and hit 10 guitar players (pointing at the crowd)..Everyone wants to play guitar but a bassist never wants for anything."

Both are hard to find. Drummers can be tricky....finding a consistent one is a treasure. My last drummer was a human metronome, I swear. When he learned a song, it was the same tempo...every time, right on the mark. Never had to worry about tearing my fingers apart trying to keep up. That was the compliment he got the most.

There have always been a lot fo very good drummers in the Johnstown area. I know of a few who are very good and dedicated players who are looking for work right now. Bass players seem to be a hard commodity to find anywhere. I started out on drums and guitar and switched to bass in 1970 and have never been out of work since. Keyboard players are very difficult to find around here.

unless your in primus...
Thats it !!! A tight band is great to go listen to. A good tight blue grass band is all so something to hear. You said about keyboard players, they are hard to find. A friend of mine plays keys and he is really good. He does some of the 1 button stuff but not much. Bob gets up 3 of them going at once plus he has a synth rack system thats the poop. We have fun ripping it up a little. (plug) Check us out at www.soundclick.com/thedelve Kinda like electronic music meets les paul style. MMM

Bassist have always seemed to be the hardest to find (Possibly next to
singers), and as has been pointed out, to find a bassist and drummer
who sync up so well is even harder.
There are bassist who seem to think of themselves as guitar players.
These working well with a drummer is indeed rare.

There is no doubt that playing bass is a good career move for musicians in our area. There simply aren't a lot of us bassists around. Here's an interesting dichotomy, though: in my 20+ years playing bass, I have never seen so much amazingly cool gear available for our kind....from great amps to effects. At the same time, bass is being pushed further and further back in the mix in many genres of music, metal in-particular. So companies are making great stuff that will never be heard. I LOVE bands like KIllswitch Engage and Soilwork, but playing bass for these kinds of acts is akin to the sound of one hand clapping. Why would you want to play in a band where nobody hears you?
I enjoy both locking in with the drummers I play with (the amazingly talented Ron Brode and Beau Saller) and being "busy". There is nothing wrong with playing a lot of notes when it is called for, and less is not always more. There's nothing I like doing better than filling space in a song when no second guitarist is around. Any bassist woth his/her salt should be able to make a song sound full without a rhythm guitarist.
We are SO much more than a rumble in the background.
