lots of times early on, the thing is ,if you love it you won't be able too(quit)

you have to take a look at your developement, look where you were 6months, a year, 2 years ago etc... and look where you are now. frustration, unfortunately is a part of it early on, cause you want to be so much better than you are perhaps. put it in perspective and don't try to play, learn stuff that is beyond on your skill level at this point. It's a life long endevour, you just need to be realistic in your approach. i know it's hard when you hear something you want to play but your skill level (as far as dexterity, knoledge of your fretboard and your ear are still developeing. hang in there Kayla, take a little break and just think, "could i do what i'm able to do now, a year ago"?

my biggest regret early on was not learning more theory. learn your fretboeard inside and out.

you'll be fine, take a breather and come back to it if you have too.

everybody goes through it at some point, and some, many times along the way.

thanks mjb. its very frustrating. i wish everything came easy, and i really wish people (who don't play instruments) would realize it takes longer than 5 mins to learn a new song (esp when you NEVER heard it before). im overly frustrated about tryin to learn songs i dont even know and for that matter - dont want to play lol. ugh. i think im just gonna stick to playing music i love and not music that other people want me to play, i wanna have fun and it not be a chore. ... im venting again lol.

I've wanted to quit every time I got a PM from some TWAT on Rockpage who thinks they know everything. Honestly, I think only a select few on here even remotely know what the fuck they are talking about. Anyway, I understand that due to my past antics as SkeezerBoy has caused me to looked on as a douche bag but hey, Fuck it.

Hi Kayla,

Im not a geetar player, but I think the same principles apply in learning your instrument. MJB gave some really good advice.

We all get frustrated, that I can tell ya :) Its all part of the process and goes with the territory. If you love your instrument as much as it seems you do, then no worries, it will pass.

I can recall from when I was a beginner and moving forward, that learning can come in spurts. It would seem like I would stay stagnant in the same place for long periods of time and then, BAM!, a major spurt and on to a new plateau. Id stay at that plateau for a while and, boom, another jump. If you stick with it, and Im sure you will, the time periods in between the "plateaus or "growth spurts" become shorter.

Focus on the things you do well when you are discouraged....you can never practice the "basics" too much - ever. I would disagree a little with MJB as far as pushing beyond your skill level; it doesnt hurt to try, but be realistic about it. Keep it fun. Taking some time away from the instrument is sometimes a good thing too.

Learning an instrument is a real commitment. There are no shortcuts unless you are some sort of prodigy. Persistence, practice and realistic/practical expectations are the keys to improvement and reaching goals :)

Good luck! Youll be fine...it happens to the "experienced" players as well.

If it was easy, everybody would do it.

Just remember that every time you get frustrated and want to quit. Nothing worth working for and getting good at comes easy and it may seem simpler to hang it up than to put all the hard work and effort into learning something you love to do.

Practice, practice, practice. Take lessons from talented people. Play with musicians who are much better than you every chance you get whether sitting in, jamming, or joining a band with more seasoned players who you can learn from, who will push you to get better, and you will eventually start to rise to the level of the other players. Make sure you are having fun. If you don't enjoy it, what's the point?

Being a musician can be fun and rewarding.

Good luck and don't quit.

Kayla, I can relate to your frustration. It happened to me when I first tried guitar, and mine's been sitting in the corner ever since! (Of course, my busy schedule that doesn't allow much time for practicing had a lot to do with that.)

As others have said, this is commonplace with learning any instrument. Trying to expand your skill set and try new skills can be frustrating if you don't get it right away, but just keep practicing and practicing - that's the only way you conquer those hurdles. Then when you have accomplished one skill hurdle, you move on to the next.

And I'm determined that I'll eventually brush the dust off my acoustic and give it another try sometime soon. (Or I'll just keep perfecting my virtuoso skills on the kazoo... )

my girlfriend threw away my kazoo. I played that thing all the time.

Seriously though, more practice and more experience. Stuff that was hard for me when I first started I can play through the first time now.

99% of band cover songs require a minimum of effort. I will learn 3 or 4 songs in an hour or so.
Stand back, I like to rock out.

thanks everyone for the encouragement. its greatly appreciated.

jim, you should brush off that acoustic. we could have a jamnight, jamming with jim price :D

as far as learning songs, sometimes its easy sometimes im ready to throw stuff lol. guitar seems to be harder for me to pick up and cover a song, bass on the other hand - seems to come a lil more naturally. maybe i should be playing bass instead...

with that being said, jam night thursday night at the trackside. with any luck i will have my guitar there lol.

thanks again everyone.
