Now that it almost seems like summer, its finally time to reskin the Steinberger rat guitar. I'll add more pics as it gets finished.
Here is the "Before", with Barden pickups. These electronics work perfect for this all-maple boat paddle:
Remove all the hardware:
Some steakhead glued an "L" to the wing. F'ing duh.
Yeah, I tried StripEze...didn't do much to this finish.....
So I had to sand and sand and sand til I got thru the black paint and then sanding seal (there is still a little bit of sanding seal orange on some edges--more sanding tomorrow).
This little Rat yielded some really nice maple:

So what kind of finishing plans do you have for it? Solid paint, trans stain, natural (oil or laquer)?
That's pretty cool. I don't know why more people don't play Steinbergers! They're the ultimate travel and gigging guitar!

Natural with nitrocellulose laquer sanding seal and at least 12 coats of gloss nitrocellulose laquer clearcoat.
I thought about an amber stain until I saw how nice the wood looks.
Painting stain-grade wood should be a felony.

Scott, please keep it. If there's one thing Fedup needs, its tiny guitars.

I saw that picture and about pissed my pants laughing. Best use of photoshop I've seen in a LONG TIME.
I've seen those guitars in magazines before, but I never realized how small they were until I saw that pic. Do they sound like a normal guitar? How in the world do you tune them?

I don't think that photoshop is to scale.
You tune them with the knobs on the bridge. Kind of like the fine tuners on a floyd rose.
Stand back, I like to rock out.

After 12 clearcoats (4 hours between coats, level sanded after 8 ). Only 3 more to go, then wait 2 more weeks for it to cure.
Sure wish the left wing had flame like the right wing.

I have to let it sit and cure for 1 more week and I should finish up a day or two after that. The only thing left to do is to sand it smooth (1200 & 2000 grit), buff/polish and re-assemble the hardware.
I'll probably polish up the frets with 2000 grit before stringing.

I use 2000 grit to clean them up and them I use Mother's Mag Wheel polish on my dremelw / a polishing wheel to make them shine. Give that a shot sometime to see if you like it.

I figured 10 days was enought curing time. Wetsanded, buffed & assembled.
It looks darker at the bottom, but it all depends on the light reflection. Angled the other way, the top looks dark and the bottom is bright...kinda like one of those 3D GIF-looking pics that came in Crackerjack boxes.
