Homegrown Rocker or Wild Kingdom ?

Post by Hawk »

J.P. I hear you're working on a Wild Kingdom segment ? Actually communicating with a fox and making distressed rabbit sounds ? Pics ? Audio ? Film at 11:00 ?

edit: grammatical repair.

Hell, word travels fast...

Image

Admittedly the picture quality isn't great, but this is a fox that has been marauding around the Forever Broadcasting building during the past few weeks.

A couple of Saturdays ago, I heard the X-Man on Rocky mention the fox on the air, as it was in the bird feeder area outside the Rocky studio window. The following Monday night, when I came in to record some "Homegrown Rocker" stuff, I had my first encounter with the fox. It made this huffing/growling sound when it saw me going to my car. I made the sound back at it, and it answered me. We did this for a few moments, and the fox retreated through the transmitter section of the parking lot and off into the wilderness.

Then this past Sunday night when I was leaving after the "Homegrown Rocker," the fox was again in the transmitter section of the lot, and it again made its noise at me as I went to my car. I again answered it, and we went back and forth for about five minutes. This time, though, I had my digital camera with me, and decided to try something...After getting into my car, with the window down, I mimicked the sound of a baby rabbit squealing. This caught the fox's attention, and it cautiously made its way up into the main parking lot area, and came within about 40 feet of my car. That's when I took the picture. It continued to make its huffing growl sound at me, especially when it couldn't locate any rabbits in distress. (It probably realized it had been duped and was pissed off.) It eventually headed to the upper parking lot and around the building toward the bird feeder area.

Forever's building complex is located in what we refer to as "the swamp." This has always been a sort of wilderness area, with a meadow, a creek, forest and even a marsh. When I worked in the old WFBG building in the '80s and early '90s, we saw everything from deer to snakes to frogs to hawks and more. We had skunks living under the building at one point. There is still an abundant rabbit population in the area, certainly enough of them to keep a fox well fed.

I will have my camera with me again when I come in to do "Homegrown Rocker" stuff this week, in case the fox is around; I'll again see if I can coax it close enough to my car for a photo.

More on this episode of Forever Broadcasting's "Wild Kingdom" as it develops...

I saw a video clip on a TV show not too long ago that captured the scene after a fox chased some folks inside a bar out west. I don't recall if it bit anybody, but the scene showed the fox chasing folks past pool tables.

That's why I'll do my rabbit calls from inside my car. I can always roll the window all the way up if it gets too close or looks hostile (or in the worst case scenario, rabid).

Home Grown Rocker - Wild Kingdon?

JP is there anything you can't do? Next you will be telling us that you are working with Uncle Ted on his hunting show!
Just be careful making that gruff sound at him or her, if it pisses it off things could get hairy.

The latest on Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the...Professor...

Early this morning (Friday) was the latest installment of my adventures with the fox.

As I was leaving Rocky around 1:30, the fox was in the lower parking lot and started huffing/growling at me. I called back. This time, our conversation lasted the better part of an hour. I had my camera with me, and snapped some new pictures (see below). The fox would come up to the main parking lot and move around the perimeter, barking at me as it maneuvered back and forth between the front door and upper lot and the lower lot and adjacent field. It kept coming back up; I think I piqued its curiosity about what was answering back at it. I threw in a few rabbit squeals, and even a whipperwill bird call. At one point, the fox retreated back down into the transmitter building area, and sat down in front of the white structure next to the transmitter lot. It just looked up toward the parking lot and my car. I think it was bewildered!

Anyway, the clincher...the fox made one more advance up toward my car, and I took a few more pictures. Then the fox once again retreated to the lower lot and made a few more huffs at me. Then in the distance, I clearly heard the sound of another animal making a deeper huff/growl from back toward the woods...the fox then instantly started moving off toward the sound of this new animal. Methinks this might have been the fox's mate.

In addition to taking more photos of the fox, I also ran my digital voice recorder on our "conversation," so now I have mp3's of the fox as well.

For the moment, pictures from the latest encounter...(the last one was taken with a low light setting; it is blurry, but at least the fox doesn't have radioactive eyes)...

Awesome pics JP! But how many MP is that camera? I know low-light settings don't allow for a sharp picture, but that has me curious

I think I know what the problem is. From the fox's eyes in the pics, I have determined that you're dealing with the elusive Eastern Zombiefox. :D You can hunt them, but you basically have to wing them, then drive a stake though their heart.
Seriously, be careful with contact, they're notorious rabies carriers.--->JMS

It's a Sony Cyber-Shot, and has 8.1 megapixels.

That picture looks pretty grainy because it was very dark and I had to adjust the brightness of the picture on the computer.

Hopefully if I encounter the fox again, I'll try the low light setting for future photos. Since I'm taking the photos from inside my car, I can use the driver's side window ledge to position the camera steady, to increase the possibility for a sharper photo.

I was just researching some fox sounds on the web, and the huff/growl this one was making was apparently it letting me know that I was on its turf. It probably perceived my calls back at it as a challenge to its territory. Some of the other sounds they make are more dog-like.

Maybe I'll attempt some dog-like noises the next time I see it, and see how it reacts...

Johnny the Fox...has kids...err...kits.

The latest episode...This past Sunday night, while wrapping things up and posting my "Homegrown Rocker" playlist and show recap, I noted movement outside the studio window near the bird feeder. I glanced out to see two fox kits (pups) exploring around the feeder area. I quickly reduced the light in the studio, grabbed my digital camera and took several pictures of the foxes using the camera's low light setting:

Through the studio window, I was only about 4 or 5 feet away from the foxes when I took these photos. And note the food on the ground they were eating...discarded microwave popcorn that somebody earlier had tossed out under the feeder. Foxes are carnivores, but know good popcorn when they see it!

I watched and photographed the foxes for about 45 minutes. I held off venturing outside right away, because I didn't know if the parent fox was in the vicinity. (Adult animals can get nasty if they feel that their young are threatened.) After the two foxes ventured off, I made my way out to my car, making some noise along the way to let the local wildlife know I was around.

But now I know a little more about why the adult fox was huffing at me in previous weeks - it had youngsters in the area!
