Obama: Legalize illegals to get them health care

President Obama said this week that his health care plan won't cover illegal immigrants, but argued that's all the more reason to legalize them and ensure they eventually do get coverage.

He also staked out a position that anyone in the country legally should be covered - a major break with the 1996 welfare reform bill, which limited most federal public assistance programs only to citizens and longtime immigrants.

"Even though I do not believe we can extend coverage to those who are here illegally, I also don't simply believe we can simply ignore the fact that our immigration system is broken," Mr. Obama said Wednesday evening in a speech to the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute. "That's why I strongly support making sure folks who are here legally have access to affordable, quality health insurance under this plan, just like everybody else.

Mr. Obama added, "If anything, this debate underscores the necessity of passing comprehensive immigration reform and resolving the issue of 12 million undocumented people living and working in this country once and for all."

Republicans said that amounts to an amnesty, calling it a backdoor effort to make sure current illegal immigrants get health care.

"It is ironic that the president told the American people that illegal immigrants should not be covered by the health care bill, but now just days later he's talking about letting them in the back door," said Rep. Lamar Smith of Texas, the top Republican on the Judiciary Committee.

"If the American people do not want to provide government health care for illegal immigrants, why would they support giving them citizenship, the highest honor America can bestow?" Mr. Smith said.

But immigrant rights groups see the speech as a signal that Mr. Obama is committed to providing health care coverage for anyone in the United States legally, regardless of their citizenship status.

"It's the first time I've certainly heard, publicly, him talking more about legal immigrants," said Eric Rodriguez, vice president for research and advocacy at the National Council of La Raza (NCLR). "I think that was certainly positive progress. We were absolutely concerned about not hearing that."

It is not Obama's bill. He didn't write it. Actually, there is no "the bill." There are/were up to 4 separate bills submitted. That before the latest iteration/abomination was released this week.

This is the game they play. They pick and choose parts of whichever of the bills suits their talking points and ignore the parts that do not. When Homie shouted out "You lie", he was both accurate and wrong. Depends on which bill he wanted to refer to.

This really isn't so much about Obama. He is the errand boy like many before him, including GW Bush. The healthcare bill(s) is/are just going to be pushed more towards Hillarycare Version 2.0 before it is either rammed down or throats or killed off.

It is almost never about what they say it is. They are not going to make it that easy or "transparent" for you. Do you know who is really responsible for engineering and writing the healthcare bill? You HAVE to know who first. then the rest begins to fall a bit more in place and make a lot more sense of the chaos.

Most (unlike common thinking) people won't go to a doctor if they can't afford it. By the time they are so sick that they need to go to the emergency room, it's to late. AND it cost YOU more because YOU pay the the emergency visit!

There is always a catch to it. There is talk about a verification process to prove that you are here legally to get any care. Then with the way the messiah works, he will probably have Acorn give them all fake ids or something. I know it is spewed rhetoric with what I say there; but you know? It would not surprise me at all if that is what they did.

The main focus on it now is that the health bills all have government funded abortions clauses in them. That is not going to fly with a lot of people, including me. They get that clause out, get out the public option, and make sure illegals will not get it and then I will like it. Till then, it is a no go as far as I am concerned.

Why is the public option bad ? After all, it is an OPTION that NO One has to choose and it is NOT FREE.

You are half right. They are also a huge potential voting bloc for the democrats. Neither party wants to do anything about it that's why nothing of substance ever gets done. This issue is pure politics and vote pandering and politicians from both sides have done nothing despite what american citizens are demanding. This issue for me is simply a matter of right and wrong. Title 8 United States Code Section 1325 says it is illegal - a crime - to enter the US without inspection. It is punishable on a first offense with up to 6 months in prison. You have politicians who just want to ignore this. You can't run a fair and just society cherry picking what laws you enforce or rewarding law breakers. Nobody seems to be letting DUI's or other crimes slide for anybody else.
