I loved Collin's drumming in the early Genesis days. Back when they had no hits, but had a cult following. His groves were hypnotically different than the usual "back beat". Even his odd time signatures were smooth. One had to count them out to notice when he was playing in 5. He was a very clever stylist.

When Genesis went pop they lost most of their cult followers. When the cult followers said, the pop version of Genesis sucked, Collins would retort, "We used to play little theaters, now we're playing Statiums and the biggest venues, Someone must like what we're doing".

Collins the pop drummer IMHO was just another drummer.

"Selling England by the Pound" is one of my all time favorite albums.

That is too bad. "Old" Genesis was great. Later had some okay stuff, but, ya
a lot of it was...not so great. He was an under-rated drummer though. That
whole band was just killer. Steve Hackett. Dang.

Collins' solo stuff, to me, was the worst of it though. When he became the
default Disney-theme song guy, lost interest. Guess the worst thing to read
in there was:

"But this is not the end of his music career, as Collins told fans: 'Don't worry,
I can still sing.'".

Terrific.

But at least

But at least he can still sing!

That means that we could still get Su-su-sudio part 2!

I love "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway", but the last album I really liked from them was "Duke"..

Hope for the best for him though...

I'll never forget seeing Genesis after the Trick Of The Tail tour when they played at Rec Hall. Collins took over for Peter Gabriel on vocals, and they brought in Bill Bruford on drums. Later they brought in Chester Thompson. They had two identical huge sets of drums--one right handed and one left handed set up symmetrically onstage. I went up on the "track" for some "recreation" and found myself looking down at the drums from above backstage while Collins and Thompson did a symmetrical drum duet. Just incredible.

Edited for re-clarified memory.

Ya, he and Chester have done that since. 'tis really cool. Would have liked
seeing Bruford! Another guy who's name doesn't come up enough in the
high pantheon of amazing drummers.

After thinking about it (hey, that was a black dude I saw, not Bill Bruford.) It was actually Chester Thompson that I saw with Collins. I believe it was 1978.

Well, so much for recreation and its effect on memory clarity.

I saw Genesis with Bruford as well. Some small theater in Pittsburgh. I can't think of the name of it. Had to be around 1976. I think the theater is gone now.

Bruford and Collins on the same stage ! Doesn't get any better !

Phil Collins did lots of projects that were musical departures from Genesis where you can see his versatility.
