I'm excited!

Post by Lisa »

Just checked the dept. of health's exception approval site for the smoking ban and I see our name! Wooo whoo! This isn't for upstairs. We can't do it there because of our food sales. But we have the Train Station...a smaller downstairs bar that is darker, more quaint and just fun. We have some maintenance work to do to it before we can reopen it but it won't take long. We have seen a loss of business due to the smoking ban...funny thing is, the customers are leaving once the temps drop to go to bars to smoke. The bars that are allowing them to smoke aren't approved. We just can't bring ourselves to do it illegally so we applied and got approved because the basement bar was always on our liquor license.

I'm excited about this venture. We've tried opening it before but there was no reason to draw people to two bars at one location. Now they will have a choice. They can be upstairs in the Lounge area where they can eat fine food and watch the fireplace and the big screen tv.

Or they will be able to go downstairs where they will be able to enjoy a different bar type atmosphere along with a pool table, watch sports on our tv, and just chill.

At first, I didn't want to do it because it is hard to find enough reliable workers for one bar. How are we going to do two? We'll figure it out.

thought I would just share our exciting news.

This no smoking law puts bars in a difficult position. Most people that drink also smoke, i would wager. (i'm the exception as a non-smoking drinker). i love beer and think beer is God's gift to humanity

I don't want to breath in anyone else's smoke but banning smoking ONLY where food is served is BS too. If they ban it they should have banned it from ALL establishments. The current law creates an uneven playing field for thos places that serve food as well as booze. It's unfair to these places that lose biz to "booze-only" bars.

So I feel for you Lisa.

Either ban smoking or don't, but don't give an unfair advantage to some bizs over others.

now for a joke:

A pirate walks into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender looks down and says "You know that you have a steering wheel in your pants"
The pirate replies "Ay, it's drivin' me nuts!"

Not too sure yet. It is a smaller area but acoustic wise, its a great area. We'll have to feel that one out. The guys from Serious Jones was in the house this past Saturday (was a full house for sure!) and after they tore down their equipment, ventured around back to take a look at the place. They seemed to think it was very doable.

Our main priority right now is to get it cleaned up and opened. We want to do some special things to make sure people can tell from the road that the Train Station is opened because you can not see it from the front. If anyone is talented enough to make a train crossing sign that flashes let me know :)

We actually got the certificate in the mail this weekend and it has given us a spark. We had some customers who volunteered some time on Saturday to help with some of the heavy work...and are planning on coming back out this Saturday. It's nice to have some help because most of the time its just Frank and me....and well, I'm a woman, so it was mostly Frank doing the heavy stuff.
