Thin Lizzy
I am having one of those nights where sleep isnt coming easy so, I decided to turn off the TV and listen to some downloaded songs on the computer. I was shifting through the shit my kids listen to and discovered I had two songs from TL on there - one of course is "Jailbreak" and the other one I didn't remember until I listened to it - "Still in Love With You". Yes its a ballad but what guitar work by then guitar player John Sykes. So I went back through my shit and realized there was a live recording with one of the numerous guitarist that went through the band and that was Gary Moore. I listened again, this time not so much to the lyrics as I did before, but to the music. WHAT A MIND BLOWING EXPERIENCE! Moore, Sykes, Gorham, Robbo Robertson all had great skills. Phil Lynot's haunting but soulful lyrics are meaningful.
Just thought I would share.
PS On their final tour which lasted from 1983-84, I had the opportunity to see them play at Zepplinfeld in Nuremberg West Germany for one of their last concerts. That day which coincides with Donnington's Castle of Rock Festival, I saw Twisted Sister, Motorhead, Saxon, Thin Lizzy, Meatloaf, BOC and Whitesnake. A GREAT FUCKIN DAY!!!!

Having talent is one thing....what you do with it is something else
VH1 Classic played a UK show from 1978 last night. What a great band. They could play full-on shred, R&B, tender ballads, crunchy classic rock, excellent lyrics and hooks, top-shelf musicianship, and worked a crowd extrememly well. My wife commented that Thin Lizzy was a "listener's band," That there were no Vari-Lites, no Jumbo-Trons, no gay dancers, no tricks, just good songs played by good musicians. There were no backlights at all, just a lit-up Thin Lizzy sign about 5 ft. wide, 2 strobes on the drums, and 3 followspots out front. It was about the music.
Phil Lynott was a tremendous talent, especially when one realizes he's bi-racial, which was a major sin in America until fairly recently. I have to admit, with his thick Irish accent, I could only make out about every third word he was saying, but the crowd understood him just fine.
Oh, and Scott Gorham was REALLY good in this show, very understated and tasteful. That band has had some amazing guitarists over the years.--->JMS

Didnt they do a song named "The Cowboy Song"gosteelers wrote:I love Thin Lizzy.
Cue up "the Rocker"
I said "Hey baby, meet me I'm a tough guy"
Got my cycle outside, wanna drive?
She just looked at me and rolled them big eyes
And said "Ooh I'd do anything for you 'cause you're a rocker"
Great lyrics/rockin'

I'm in. Let me know when you want to start.slackin@dabass wrote:... i could probably play in a thin lizzy tribute band and never be bored.
I'm a complete Lizzy fanatic. I love every lineup, but have to admit that I have a special soft spot for the Robertson/Gorham lineup. Having said that, Black Rose (Moore/Gorham) is just about as perfect of a song as it gets. Phil's lyrical alliteration and romantic imagery call to mind the great Irish poets of the past (Yeats, anyone?). One really can't say enough great things about this band. Great thread.
Agreed. Black Rose didn't sell so well, but is probably my favorite, though I haven't heard a copy in years. I'd go see a Thin Lizzy cover band. Thin Ice used to do Cold Sweat, Jailbreak, one more obscure one that escapes me, and we used to open with Are You Ready. Every single song was great fun to play. I'd love to do The Cowboy Song bluegrass-style.--->JMSGallowglass wrote:Black Rose (Moore/Gorham) is just about as perfect of a song as it gets.
