How do you guys 'make it up'?

Post by JackANSI »

Just wondering how everyone 'makes it up' to people when they have the rare but unavoidable cancellation come up. The recent snow has brought thoughts of this up in my head.

Might be nice to share some award-winning tips, being that this is something that effects everyone here that gigs out.

I would suggest that you speak with the owner/manager of the establishment and if you scheduled an opener and discuss with each party individually on how things could be arranged to make up for a cancellation because of bad weather. Find out what the owner/manager wants you to do or come to an understanding and then talk to the other band. Some things cant be avoided - such as weather, illness, death, etc. Other things such as just plain out cancelling because you are fighting with your old lady or another member of the band you are in are not.
Fix it the best you can with all three parties and go from there.
Of course, ppl will think that I dont know what the fuck I am talkin about anyway.

well first off always blame the drummer(this has nothing to do with anything recent). It seemed that everytime i would put shows on it was always the other bands drummers fault. I only have played a multi band shows so we would have to make it up to the other band, by giving them a show in return, or i would still help promote the show with a new line up. i would also try to still go, unless i had mexican right before the show.
The script was written, and the villian was cast. The provocation needed, they will provide. They did it before, they'll do it again.

If the weather is bad enough that the band cancels, then you might be doing the venue a favor if no patrons showed anyway. A few years ago, my band was supposed to play at 30 Something because of another band cancelling. I developed an inner ear infection two days before the gig. I couldn't even walk a straight line, let alone play. We cancelled which prompted our singer to go on a personal crusade to have me removed from the band. Anyway, that's the only gig I ever had to cancel.

The best thing you can do on short notice is to come up with an appropriate replacement band to fill in. That usually fixes any problems.

That's what friends & Rockpage are for.

this is what slacker theory does. it's the only thing we do. then we usually bad mouth rob to the bar owner or manager. it usually works out

Actually, Rob's question was, I believe, more hypothetical (Our last Friday
show was cancelled...but not by us. More a lack-of-electricity at the venue
sort).

Unfortunately, sometimes, canceling, is inevitable. Having to be the ass
who has to make that call, or stop in, especially on short notice,...man, that
just sucks. Talk about feeling like a heel.

At least bad weather is a real reason. And, it is true that sometimes, in the
cases of inclement weather, it does seem like canceling can seem best all
around...but I still can't bring myself to do it (As evidenced by our furthest
show hitting EVERY snow and ice storm the last couple of years).

Yeah it was a hypothetical question. I'm really hoping that early snow isn't an indication of how this winter is going to be. I like snow, I like driving in snow, I don't like driving from Altoona to State College in a foot+ of snow. Done it, takes a really LONG time.

Its also less about the bar owners, more about the people that come out to see you. The crowds at our shows seem to be getting bigger and bigger and I was looking for ways others deal with making in up to the crowd that follows them.
