The Flu

Post by todd17063 »

Has anyone else caught the Flu bug yet this year? I got mine over the weekend and it has had me laid up for the last four days.. Its a nasty bug going around this year. Keep yourself and others as far away from it as you can !!

I just got my flu shot at the college workplace yesterday. A number of students have reported flu-like symptoms already, whether from the conventional flu or H1N1. I'll likely have to get an H1N1 shot as well when the vaccine becomes available, since I'll be exposed to it. The campus is strongly promoting preventive measures like handwashing, covering your nose and mouth when sneezing or coughing, and staying home or away from classes if you're sick.

The Flu

Post by joltinjeff »

My 15 yo son has been sick off and on for nearly a month. The first time they tested for strep throat and it came back negative. He has been coughin and sneezin all over the damned place. Last night while I was covering a meeting for work, my wife texted me and said he had a fever or 103, so being the good dad that I was left the meeting to take him to the ER at JC Blair. The dr tested him for H1N1 which thank god was negative. He then tested him for strep again and he has it. What happened was that the virus manifested into the flu. He is now on penicillin to get rid of the viral infection.
He was in so much pain and felt so terrible that he was actually crying. He has slept most of the day and has not broke his fever yet. If he does not break it tonight, I will keep him home again tomorrow.
The shit is just plain NASTY!!!!!

Since we aren't playing this week, I was kinda hoping that I'd get it now and get it over with. :jocolor:

Won't do a flu shot...I'd rather give the old immune system a workout.

Since the universe has a warped sense of humor, I will probably come down with it the day before a gig.

Its very sad to hear about how sick your son is. I have been there with mine a few times.

Just to clear up some misconceptions, strep (Streptococcus bacillus) and staff (Staphylococcus bacillus) are bacteria. They can sometimes be treated by anti-biotics. Antibiotics can only work on bacterial infections. There are very few drugs to use on viral infections, like the flu or the common cold. There are some antiviral meds (Tamiflu) that help with the severity of the infection, but do not kill the virus.

Sometimes flu shots can help immunize against the seasonal flu. I do not know if I will get the H1N1 vaccine if it becomes available. I do not think there has been enough testing done on it yet. It was a rush job.

I'm on the tail end of it right now, I feel horrible. Head is all stuffy, feel like I'm going to cough up a lung.

No medical = tough it out.

Single malt scotch has been known to help the ole immune system. Especially those from the Hebrides. (I prefer Laphroaig and Lagavulin).

Should that be something you work on during rehearsals? I feel that between all the blood and crap that gets thrown on stages by big name bands, coughing up a lung on stage at one of the local bars would be hard to beat.

It's been a "sick" year for me, pun intended. I've been sick twice as many times this year as I've been in years past. I tend to get sick 2-5 times (including allergy points). This year? About 8... And I've still got 2 months to go!

This current bug was a total pain in the ass. I caught it and it put me in bed for a few days. The first night, I was out and felt fine, then I got home, and was in that "Ehh, here it comes..." mentality. High fevers, nausea, aches, pains, headaches, feeling like I'd rather be shot,... Oh yeah. What fun. But, it's really not that bad at all once you get past the bed-ridden days. I just have a lingering cough now that I can't get rid of
