I don't mean to get so philosophical here, but this is something I read and it fits how musicians play.

If you use your hands, you are a laborer.

If you use your hands and your mind, you are a craftsman.

If you use your hands, your mind and your heart, you are an artist !

Sometimes I struggle to reach the artist level because the Blues demands one play from the heart. I get caught up in playing the notes instead of feeling the song.

I've seen many musicians at each of these levels and I've had the great pleasure of observing some go from the first level to the third level.

It's not always about chops, it about combining chops with the mind and the heart.

i really like that ... its a good thing to think about. sometimes i get caught up on playin correctly and forget to just put my soul into it.

my tattoo reads Fender, let your soul shine. id rather see someone who isnt the most technical guitar player playing with soul than watch someone who can play for days without makin a mistake.

Meh, I don't really worry about those types of labels. It always seemed pretentious and self-serving to me. I just like to follow what ever muse I have at the time.

Nah. Whomever wrote this was using their hands and their heart, but not their mind when they wrote it.

If you work, you are a a laborer.

If you are a skilled laborer, you are a craftsman.

If you produce art, you are an artist.

And something that many on Rockpage don't seem to understand:

If you write lyrics to songs, you are NOT and artist, you are NOT a musician, you are a poet.

Saw a bumper sticker on a Jesus freaks car that said : "My boss is a Jewish Carpenter". Pretty good one.

I usually play with the emotions that are rolling through me at the moment.

I use my hands to play the instrument, I use my heart and mind to write the lyrics and the music, but it is the emotion that produces the soul.

I consider myself an artist because of the art that I create. It may not always be good art, but it is art none the less. Either poetry and pros, drawings, and music. Art.

That goes for everyone.

Maybe that's just it...the struggle. Go where it goes...too much analyzing leads to lack of expression, in my opinion. So you played the same lick two or three times...so what? People want to feel it...I doubt there's many out there going "God, I just heard that same lick a minute ago."
I can't blame you, though...I improvise quite a few songs and I find myself going "did I do that already?"

I find that as long as you love the music nothing else matters because thats what its about. I love to play any chance I get how people view me as an artist doesn't matter. The people I jam with who enjoy when I play is what I find important. This is not an area that is musician friendly unless your playing whats on the radio or the same old same old you aren't noticed. You guys have a unique sound and style. You are very good at what you do and should be proud to bring some style to the area. Love your Sunday sessions keep the faith there are people out there that appreciate you.

As far as the thread goes. Don't read too much into it. I just thought it was a cool little saying. But we have to admit, when someone plays with "feeling" it just sounds better. And, well, I guess that does come from the heart.

I hardly ever do that... get caught up in playing the notes. I love getting taken away with feeling the note I'm playing, but those notes are rare jewels for me to treasure. More often, I get caught up in something someone else is playing. It's so much easier and effortless for me to listen than to play, but I still am driven to play. Does that make any sense? I've done that numerous times with Felix, and Tim Mann used to play these fluid, stinging neo-classical leads that were so interesting and powerful, in Black Angel, I hardly ever came in when I was supposed to!

For me art is like a big collection in my mind. It's a bunch of snapshots of things that are pleasing to the eye, the ear, the touch, and the deeper self. Once I experience it, it stays in my memory and heart, but I don't feel like I own it, just that I got to experience it. When I create something, like a song, I'm just taking something from my collection, and making it available for someone else's. Even if they don't like it, I'm humbled they took the time to sift through it.--->JMS
