On thing to remember is that at least some of the newbies are getting noticed by the " Old Dudes " . Clapton told the entire audience at Royal Albert Hall, after playing with Bonamassa, " This is the guy you should listen to, not me. He is the future. ". So the torch was passed on by one guitar God. It's not just a guitar thing either. Music anymore is an image thing and being different. There are a lot of local bands around that I would rather see than pay $100.00 a ticket to go see Nickleback. Not to say that NB are not talented but now band are playing into the " Nickleback Syndrome ". I used to like Theory of a Dead Man until they got a new singer that sounds just like Kroger ( spelling? ). Why? Because the chicks dig the NB sound and the quirky songs about something in your mouth and such. It's like rap to me. You can't listen to a song without it being bleeped the *&#@ out every second or so. I'm not saying that expressing yourself with expletives is wrong, but don't do it just because the tweeners buy the CD's. Do it with some heart.

You gotta be kidding me!! You attribute Dimebag's success to his death on stage? You don't suppose he's labeled a 'guitar god' based on the mere fact that he wasn't allowed to participate in any more guitar competions in the state of Texas.....because he won them ALL?!!!! C'mon man

my post says nothing about critiquing dimebags skill. Sorry, its just a fact that not as many people knew/followed pantera before his death. Now if you say "ehh pantera is OK" Your going to hear "are you serious, they had dimebag!" If dime was alive he would still be shredding it up, no doubt. I'm just stating it helped put them more on the map across the country.

Far Beyond Driven debuted at #1 ...... Dimebag was murdered 9 months later. I'm sorry but you're running out of steam on the Dimebag front.

As far as the other guitarists you mentioned, the reason why is rather simple. Innovation. During the highlights of these guys careers they were doing things in music that just hadn't been done before. When these guys found their "gimick" they stumbled across something that nobody else ever did and therefore were god-like. Whether its Jimmy Page playing with a bow, Eddie's invention of multi-finger tapping, or Jimi playing with his teeth, it was all something no one had ever seen before.

As to the reason why don't the newer guys get the credit? There's not much more to invent, it's been done. Is Petrucci 'technically' a better guitarist than almost everyone to ever pick up a guitar? quite possibly. Has he done anything besides perfect what these founding father's have brought to the table? no

Not one single guitarist mentioned in this thread is a shitty guitarist. And judging by the responses to your post, everyone of them is getting the credit they deserve. But always remember the guys in the past carved the roads for the present. Without them, music as we know it today could be alot worse.

That's why I have always said I'd much rather have written rock music in the 60's and 70's as opposed to present day. So much easier to come up with something that doesn't sound like another song.

Where do you get your facts?!

Far Beyond Driven was released March 15th, 1994. Dime was killed on stage on Dec 8th, 2004. That's ten years, my friend.

I thought he meant years not months.

If it were months he'd be in the running with Pac and Biggie for most post-mortem releases.

There is one thing B.B. King has that Joe Bonamassa doesn't: a 65-year career. B.B. King still plays... well.

I get a little defensive when it comes to Dime. He was a huge influence on me.

Oh believe me, the same goes for me. More so his brother Vinnie, since I'm a drummer, but Pantera in general was VERY influencial to me in the 90's. I actually was afforded the oppurtunity to play on the same stage Dime was killed on (Alrosa Villa). The very thought that I was standing on that stage where my idols played, and one was murdered, was surreal. You can even see the bullet holes in the wall. A constant reminder that one of the best ever is no longer with us.

John Petrucci is definately my fav. guitarist. He really can do no wrong! The video posted gave me goosebumps, and I have heard that song hundreds of times.
Guitar players have morphed and will continue to do so. John Petrucci. plays with just as much feeling and heart as guitarists like B.B , Clapton, and SRV, ( who are also huge influences of mine).
Ahhh Dammit, I forgot what the actual subject was about, I hate it when that happens, Lets just talk Dream Theater!

The script was written, and the villian was cast. The provocation needed, they will provide. They did it before, they'll do it again.
