Civility in debate? You're joking, right? I nearly doubled over in laughter at this one. I peed a little.
Tea Partiers are spitting on black congressmen, calling them n-words and faggots, dressing down wheelchair-bound Parkinson's victims, calling in death-threats, smashing out windows, pretending to be pimps and hookers, putting scope-crosshairs on Dem districts, wearing handguns to political rallies, and Pho-shopping the first black president in whiteface. Small-govt nutjobs are flying airplanes into federal buildings, shooting up the Pentagon and Holocaust Memorial, and applauding the 1814 sacking and burning of the White House. Anti-choicers are blowing up abortion clinics and killing doctors in church because everyone has "a right to life."
Then again, Biden DID drop the F-bomb.
Conservative Bush-nesia notwithstanding, nobody can deny that the current high-strung condition of public discourse is the fault of anyone but the conservative media. In the days after 9/11, they took advantage of the nationalist anger and resentment for the huge sucker-punch we took, aiming it at the opposing side (a Rush Limbaugh tactic from a few years before). The volume level has been steadily rising on the Fox News Channel and wingnut-radio for years, and any left-wing venom is simply in direct response to that. Just a few years ago, MSNBC was a lower-tier cable news channel aimed against CNN, that had one show of any value, Hardball, and nobody really watched it outside of the Beltway. Now it's a direct response to the so-bitchy-it's-comical vitriol of Faux News.
You can blame everything on Obama, if you want. Dems don't have the recessive Bush-nesia gene, it was just a year and a half ago... I still remember how it all panned out, even if you don't, and I'm not a right-wing historical revisionist. BUT, to even give the inkling of the idea that rightwing whackitude is caused by anyone other than their media-machine is proof-positive that conservatism itself is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Fox News Corp (a very profitable multi-national media corporation), and that the lunatic fringe are their best customer.--->JMS

It is a thing of one person doing it, not a group. The dems do that same thing. People just don't see it when it is their end getting the blunt of it. Look at the dems when Bush was pres. There were death threats, published books about his assassination, and various other "illegal" things that were done and talked about him, and the Repub party for that matter. The Dems did nothing to stop it or even try to discourse it. So other wards, it is good for them to say and do what they please, but it is not for anyone else to do so. Typical hypocrites if I say so myself ..

Oh, and before you start a six page reply. I'm not defending the Repubs in any of it. I am just stating that it happens to both sides.
