Sage Words of Advice

Don't practice until you get it right ! Practice until you can't get it wrong !

Don't practice what you can do ! Practice what you can't do !

advice

Post by lynch1 »

I had a boss one time that told everyone at a meeting..."if you don't like what you're doing, find something else to do." I wish people where I work now would follow that advice instead of pissing and moaning 24/7.

My personal addition to that quote...

"Everything happens for a reason. Sometimes, it's just not your reason." People tell me that that small twist I give it actually gives the whole thing an angle that they can understand. Afterall, aren't quotes like this supposed to enlighten?

Instead of "C'est la vie" ("That's life") I tell everyone "C'est la mort", or "That's (the) death." Obviously, not literally death, but we all do things once in awhile that aren't the greatest, and that cause things to fall down. As I'm currently telling a good friend of mine, it's the people who can try to get a perspective of the other person and not go after them for mistakes that are worthy of considering friends. So, "C'est la mort" is what some would consider a testing moment in their friendship. And obviously, the people who are judgemental over the little things are hard to keep as friends. C'est la mort

When it comes to practicing, mine is:

"there are no mistakes, only unwanted results."

My dad used to have one that could get discussions going every time he said it. Some people would agree, others would get riled instantly.

"Accidents don't HAPPEN....they're CAUSED."

Pay them dues. (Yes, I know it's grammatically incorrect.)

A career in music is a series of snowjobs and blowjobs. Success depends on which you're giving, and which you're getting.

Success, however, is not measured in money or fame. It is what you experienced. The ride is it's own reward, and you will be a better person because of it.

When other musicians say, "You guys sounded good," they don't always mean it. But maybe you didn't sound good.

They already have a sport for drunks with microphones. It's called karaoke. Playing drunk is like f**king drunk... you might think you're doing well, but somebody else just wants it to be over. And it's okay to refuse a drink/drug from a fan. You have a job to do.

Small drumkits rule in every single way.

You don't have to be louder than everyone else, just better.

It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice.

Drive trumps talent every time. But talent is nice to have. So I hear.

Sometimes... okay, mostly... gigs do not go exactly the way you've been daydreaming about them. The exact point where they go south is the exact point where you learn something valuable. Sometimes about life, so pay attention.

Don't screw with Jim Price. He is your friend, even when he gives you a less-than-stellar review. If he did that, you deserved it. Practice harder.

And finally:
Carry an extra 1/4" cable. You'll need it eventually.--->JMS
