Sometimes Magic
Wow. I just got back from Roar and, Wow!
It was about 9:15 we were watching Felix and talking to JP a little about shit..
We walked away to get funnel cakes, this was me, Chelsea and Marina. As we walked around we heard Felix and the boys wailing and it was a fun time. As we got back to the music I was eating my funnel cake thinking "Man it is a shame that there are so few people here to see this". Around 9:45 Feliz announced last song ans they the boys jumped into "Rocky Top" and I thought, hmmmm. Well anyway they did a great job on Rocky Top.
The guys said thanks and the lights came on.
Mind you up to this point there were about 30 to 50 people standing around and watching 20 to 50 feet from the stage.
We were standing and waiting to go say hi to the band and a woman in a wheel chair was being pushed to the stage by a big, long haired man about 6' 5. They got to the front and talked to Felix for a minute... The guys were shutting stuff down and I heard Felix say "What time is it?".
The opening notes of "Green Grass and High Tide" rang out. Felix looked at Jeff and Jeff looked back sort of questioning. Felix played the bar again. Jeff picked his bass back up and followed along. The house light were on but they suddenly dimmed. Bobby Waters joined in and the song Began. The Woman in the wheel chair stood and raised her hand, the big man who obviously loved her put his hand out to steady her. She raised her hand and watched Felix sing the verses to Green Grass. In this moment everyone near came to the front of the stage. Felix looked down at the woman struggling to remain standing and the big man with the long hair and he played what was the most magical rendition of Green Grass that I have ever heard. It was like he was a playing to this woman and his heart was in every note. There were 50 people at the front of the stage watching this display. When the woman could no longer bear it she sat, only for a moment and the big man had enveloped her in his arms. She rested a moment and stood again with Felix playing what must have been the most perfect guitar solos that have ever been played. You could see the admiration on her face when she watched Felix and he looked at her as though his life depended on the validity of every note that he played.
This could have been the Rolling Stones or U2 or any number of great hall of fame bands but it turned out to be Felix and the Hurricanes who for this moment, for this song, for this crowd, for me, were the greatest Rock and Roll band on the planet, bar none. My eyes teared up and I just stood there and soaked it all in. It was magic.
Thank God for live music.
Thank you Felix, Bobby and Jeff for restoring my faith in the power of music.
Thanks to the big man who loved this woman so much you could see it a mile away. Thanks also to the big man on the stage who also loved this woman so much that he gave of himself and made a memory for the ages.

Great story Dave. God bless that woman, the man, and the " Canes ". As far as I am concerned the Hurricanes are a Hall of Fame Band. They don't just get up there and go through the motions, they bust out emotions. They mean that shit. And they make you mean that shit too. They are a class act, bar none.

Very, very cool!
I had just left the stage area so I could attend the benefit at 30 Something, and had just arrived at my car when I heard the first notes of "Green Grass" sound. I'm disappointed that I missed this special moment, but it capped what I (and a lot of people around me) thought was an exemplary Hurricanes show.
Earlier in the show, the woman in the wheelchair and her assistant approached the stage while the Hurricanes were doing Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Look at Little Sister." Felix saw the woman, and strode right out to the front of the stage in front of her, serenaded her with his guitar, and declared her his "little sister" through the mic. You could see the woman was happy and enjoying every moment, as were the people around her.
Everything about this night was cool, from the Hurricanes making musical magic to the glow of the full moon with scattered clouds around. Great times!

I was in that group of people who all went to the front of the stage for the Hurricanes encore. As Torny put it, it was one of the greatest moments of live rock and roll I have ever experienced. It was like a big time concert for us 50 people and fantastic little lady in the wheelchair, cheering and dancing in front of that stage.
There is no better band than Felix and the Hurricanes, and no greater connection between a band and an audience than what happened last night under a harvest moon.
