have an old crate 150 watt amp with a ev 12 inch
when i fired it up it had a loud hum and the speaker smoked.
very expensive speaker but why would that much current melt the coil in 30 seconds?

I think the main problem is that it says "crate" on the front. Try one that doesn't...

was that an EVM12L?
at 200W rms rating, they are pretty hard to burn up!
The amp probably went DC on ya.

You can blow speakers by clipping them with underpowered amps.

If it was humming, I doubt it was DC.
"Turn it down!"
"What?"
