We were discussing this last night... think of what the man accomplished... Banjo existed before he played it, and while he didn't invent the three-finger style, he perfected it, and now most people who play the instrument play LIKE HIM. That's an incredible legacy.
I hope the Bluegrass Boys are tuning up somewhere, right now. Rest in Peace, Earl.

Here's one of my favorites, Roll In My Sweet Baby's Arms, with Tom T. Hall on vocals. It's from the seminal 1982 bluegrass record, The Storyteller And The Banjoman. Listen to the athleticism and aggressiveness of the banjo, he just attacks it. No plunky quietness here, it's like a clanging bell on a fast-moving train.

I saw The Earl Scruggs Review in 1972, and Vassar Clements was in the band, along with 1 or 2 of Earl's sons. They were the middle band, John Hartford opened, and the Byrds were the headliners.

For the final encore, everyone came out, Roger McGuinn joined Earl on banjo and John Hardford joined Vassar Clements on fiddle. They played "The Ballad of Jed Clampett" for the finale. It was mind blowing great. All 4000 of the audience knew every word of that song, we were all raised on that show and that song.

It was the first week of my freshman year. I knew I was going to like college.
