Tuning Reference?

Post by Jasaoke »

Has anyone done any serious research or experimentation with different tuning reference? Frequencies other than 440hz?

Think about it: Every person is different so every singer is different so doesn't it make sense that some people's voices would be 'better' at slightly different frequencies?

I'm just curious, really. I don't think I'm about to change anything but I was wondering what, if anything, any one has learned about it.

A440 has not always been the standard. It used to be A435 (US standard in the early 20th century). But throughout history it has constantly changed for various reasons.

A440 is actually a United States standard along with weights and measurements etc.. The obvious reason is so that all instruments can play in tune together.

I worked with a group from France and they played at A443 and I met some Japanese piano tuners who said they've been tuning in Japan at A445.

It might be fun to experiment with. Could be a real pain playing in different groups. There's no short supply of internet outlandishness on the subject. Every once in a while I come across a recording that isn't 440 and I've always assumed that it was sped up or slowed down for whatever reason. But I suppose that there are areas of artistic nuance in there.
