"We don't play that."
Don't worry about it, Sean. They have a name for trolls like nosurroundsound... it starts with a "C" and ends with a "UNT." And believe me, I don't bandy that word about lightly, but sometimes the most descriptive term is the bluntest. Plus it's easy to spell. Nocontender's not so good at the spelling thing.

For the record, I have no problem answering requests (whether we know the tune or not) as long as the requester is approaching me in a repectful way. In other words, I'm not going be so curt with someone if they refrain from:
A. Barking the request at me from the dance floor
B. Trying to yell the request in my ear when I'm in the middle of a complicated run or vocal part
C. Grabbing me to get my attention (like most people, I'm anal about personal space)
D. Don't get all pissy when I tell them we don't know a particular song
E. Don't make asinine requests (i.e. a request for Slim Whitman or a request for Cannibal Corpse)
F. Say, "Well band X from last week played that song". Well we're not band X. If all bands played the same exact material, this would be a pretty boring world.
I know I sound like a curmudgeon talking about all of this, but c'mon. People need to use some common sense.

I don't like talking to fans in the middle of a set, whether playing a tune or not, because I'm too busy watching what's happening up on stage. It's like my band saw analogy earlier in this thread. While someone isn't going to lose a hand or fingers if someone is trying to chat them up on stage, it could be a potential musical disaster.
We're all very approachable during breaks. Any band that wants to do well should be. PR is very important.

You always left in the middle of the first set to go to work! You were too cool for us with your "I'm Rob Bonsell and I have to go to work to pay the bills. I only came to Pelly's so I could ride my bike and get an order of wings" attitude.

So what, we are supposed to have the notation and lyrics to every song that every person requests stored in our endless memory banks called brains?no surrender wrote:it's really interesting to hear you guys call your "bread and butter" (audience) clowns and loosers etc.. really gives me a new perspective ... since i go to your shows (did!)
another way to handle this is ... LEARN SOME NEW SHIT!!! why can't you play these requests?????? wtf is the problem.. can't handle it! haha! now who's laughing...
ps when the band says to ME "oh we don't so that sorry".. i think to myself 'what a bunch loosers" ironic isn't it
psps LED ZEP RULES!!!!
at least, learn some led zep!! please!
Are you even in a band?
First of all, we, as musicians, like to take advantage of a little thing called Alcohol. Now, mix that with trying to remember every word and note to the 300 trillion songs that have ever been written, and we can only get up to about #50 before we get lost.
We only call the ones losers who, say, for instance, are sitting at an acoustic show and request Raining Blood by slayer. Thats not only disrespectful to us, who are trying to sit up there and remember 60 songs word for word as it is, but then have someone interrupting us constantly throughout the night.
Now, i know bands should learn new shit all the time, but, when we get a request, we kinda hope that its in our realm, and now way out in left field like some of the crazy shit that gets asked of us. AND if we dont know it, we politely say "Go kill yourself you annoying little bast...." oh, i mean, we say "No, we dont know it, but we'll play around with it and see if its do-able" Because if its something that people like, its worth spending the time to learn. We got asked to do Tool and Godsmack at our first show ever, and we kinda laughed about it, til we realized we could do it. Then we gave them a shot and have been doing them ever since.

bassist_25, I don't know about Hurricane's quote, for can "IT" honestly be considered a "fan" of ANY of the bands on RockPage? I once thought "IT" was someone I could relate to, but no longer.
Also, if "IT" insists on continuing to Post, I suggest "IT" get a Dictonary! The occasional spelling or grammar error is understandable, nobody's perfect, but reading "IT"'s Posts HURTS!
songsmith, more power to you!!!
Requesting songs...here's a "for instance"...there was a certain band and a certain song, just a week ago, I remarked to someone that I hadn't heard said song in a while...and I no sooner said the words...it was like they'd read my mind!
VERY recently, I requested 2 songs, 1 was played for someone else who'd asked me to request it, the other 1 I requested for myself, but it wasn't played.
NO BIGGIE! I know I'll hear it again, one of these days. I'm not a "fair weather fan".

To sum up: We do our best to honor a request when we get it, especially if it's one that will perpetuate the spirit of what's going on at the party. I actually ask for requests throughout our shows, mainly to get an idea of what people are wanting to hear. Sometimes, this results in our playlist growing.
If I know we don't know a particular song, I'll always ask for a few alternative numbers (many times, this will produce a request for a song we know or can fake our way through).
If someone becomes adamant and/or obnoxious about a request we know we can't deliver, my standard line is, "We know a lot of songs, just not all of them." That usually ends the discussion.

Hurtful words, "my" HURTFUL words?
Being told to "FUCK OFF BITCH" and called a CUNT didn't "hurt" you?
Too bad. Early on, you alluded to being a man, so much so that when someone asked my opinion on who I thought you might be, I said a man both of us know, I'm SORRY to say...and now it seems you're supposedly a woman, so to ME you ARE an "IT" and a totally clueless "IT" at that! As far as your needing a Dictionary, I didn't say anything that MANY others haven't already said, possibly in other Posts, I just said it succinctly. ...and as for moi being, "Stankee"? If that isn't an overabundance of the pot calling the kettle black, I don't know what is!

i was just tryin to give them the look from fans eyes, that s all. really just tring to help them see why weir their. :energy: is hard to express in words.. i tryed. peolpe go to get HIGH off the energy .. not to simply "lisen to music". they can stay home and do that .. or go out put quater in jute. ever been to gig where band is gettin in to it?? theirre are LASERS EVERYWHERE!!! only this way can you no what i say!!
peace yankee, sorry i offened you.

no surrender, how can I "say" this so you will understand???
You are putting down musicians who DO put their Hearts and Souls into their playing, as well as royally pissing off all the true fans of these bands who hear, see and feel that on a semi-regular to regular basis!!! GOT IT? There are times it's amazed me that people are talking during music that's "lifting me up"! (Translation: making me HIGH!) So please, can you just STFU???
Ron, weren't you supposed to BAN her, or something, months ago?

I read through this and I don't understand how anyone can assume "No Surrender" is a girl? Did I miss something? (probably- like the f*&%ing 80's)

And we're trying to give you the view from the musicians' eyes. This is primarily a site for musicians... fans are indeed allowed, and embraced for the most part, but nosurrender, you are one of those "fans" who are the problem, not the solution. Your control issues are common, so common that we as muso's feel the need to discuss them. We do not like being dictated to. This is part and parcel of being a musician in the first place. I want to please the fans, but in the end, I need to be on my own team. There are no federal statutes saying we have to play requests at all, or learn a song the crowd likes but we don't, or do anything nosurrender says... we do those things to appease people, but some people, if you give them an inch, will take a mile. They're generally ineffective folks in life, but when they touch the button on the CD player, "their" song comes out, and that's how it should be in a band, too. Add alcohol, and suddenly they have the courage to tell five grown men how it's going to be.
Now, not everybody's like that, thank goodness. Most showgoers are polite, and listen and dance, and feel no need to give me an unwanted critique at the end. They're not visibly angry because I listen to an audience, not an individual. I play for them, and the rest of you can smoke the bone.------>JMS

Hey no surrender...Third Standard does plenty of Zeppelin.
And it's a bit sad that Rockpage has turned into a squabbling henhouse rather than a community of musicians helping one another out or discussing relevant topics....seems it's become more of trolls bringing out the very worst in everyone, assaulting egos, and heavy handed responses from members...everyday it's something else ridiculous that spawns attacks from all participants and the same stupid advice and responses...maybe we all have too much time on our hands, and maybe I should just get some work done instead of peeking on here every now and then only to read the latest round of blitzkrieg attacks from some forum troll.......
