Some very good sage advice and thoughts listed here. Bass is a similar, yet different, animal than guitar. As mentioned here, go watch as many bass players live as you can and ask them questions. Most of us bass players love sharing how we approach bass. Feel, timing, groove, the pocket, learning to play as tight with the drummer as possible, attack, and all the other things that go along with learning bass take time and practice like anything else.bassist_25 wrote:
Next, keep in mind that bass is not just a guitar with four bigger strings. It is a different instrument with a different approach. Many guitar players make the switch, but they just end up sounding like guitar players playing bass. Also, if you decide to be a pizzicato player, then you'll have to develop your touch, which is something that many guitarists making the switch lack. I suggest spending a great deal of time both watching and listening to bass players to learn how they approach their instrument and the thing that seperates true bass players from guitar players just mucking around: The Pocket. I'm not slamming guitar players who wish to play bass here - Paul McCartney, a former guitarist, is one of my favorite cats on four strings - but I'm just saying that many don't successfully make the transistion for the reasons I stated above.

I don't think people like Claypool much here. I remember a bunch of people saying he was overrated. I think he's awesome. My fave bassist though, is Matt Freeman from Rancid. I like Flea a bunch too, even though I don't care for much new RHCP stuff.slackin@dabass wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5XeVLJeMdE

yes, it is definitely yellow tweed. there is no manufacturer information on the thing, i know its older than 1976 because it was my grandmothers and she died in 1976 .... its got three inputs (bass, rhythm, guitar) and two knobs - tone and volume on it. but its ugly as sin. lol.
its almost identical to this - cept i know its not a fender amp.

MeYatch wrote:you could have an awesome amp, but maybe not.
if it is based on the old bassman amps of the 50s it probably sounds great, but will not cut it in a gig situation.
unless you have a d.i. wich i doubt on something that old. as long as you have p.a. support and a soundman that will mic that badboy, you could have something great. but in this area, i'm pretty sure they'll put you through a d.i. box before the amp anyway, so it'd be pointless. i talked myself in a circle... go me!

Things are incredible guitar amps. But, could be an old Gibson, whichMeYatch wrote: if it is based on the old bassman amps of the 50s it probably sounds great,.
may be prety awesome as well...or a lot of other things. Love the
tweed look though.
Won't speak from a bass standpoint, but as a guitar amp, these thingsMeYatch wrote:but will not cut it in a gig situation.
can be UNBELIEVABLY loud. Sold mine many years ago (Was raising
money for a down payment on first house) because it was too loud
at the volume where it started getting "that" sound. Wish still had the
thing.
Oh, but, ya, you could just run a DI box and have your bass come through
the mons. Few years ago seemed like a lot of bass players were going
this route. Also, lot of floor multieffects units out that would give you
more, options, flexibility, etc. If you wanted, could get a little powered
monitor to run along with it so you had stage volume.

yea... not at aldo's or 30 something. Knight sound will pump some bass through the monitors for ya, but it seemed to me like there was no way it could replace a good amp for behind you. last time we played at 30 something, i didn't take an amp, just my pedal board with a tech21 sansamp on it and zilly said that running that much bass is hard on his monitors, not to mention that when i have my little 100 watt combo, i can hear myself better than i did that night. aldo's they don't have the juice to push bass through.
it seems all PA systems are just not designed to run that kinda bass... unless you go with in ear monitors... you might as well buy a small Hartke combo for the same price, though. 250 watts in a kickback cab is nice.
just one bass player's opinion... and yes, we all know, bass player opinions don't count for much.

It looks like it says "Kay" on top of it. Kay was one of the department store guitar companies from the 60s. Basically, things like Kays, Harmonies, and Silvertones were considered entry-level instruments, kind of like the Rogues, First Acts, or Samicks of yesteryear. Then things like Fender, Gibson, and Rickenbacker were the pro-level stuff.
There might be someone on here way more knowledgable about these department store brands than I am.
