gun owners
So my neighbor was mugged (choked from behind, held at knife point, and robbed) in my back yard early Saturday morning. So my wife and I went out and purchased hand guns (great deal at Gander Mountain, $400 for either a .40 or a 9 with integrated laser sight). I own shotguns, but that's too hard to conceal. So here's my question, does anybody have experience with a S&W Sigma series? I got the .40 and my wife got the 9mm. I know about the strong and long trigger pull (about 10-12lbs. and a little over 1/2") S&W has a lifetime warranty on them if they break, but is there anything I should look out for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.

Good purchase. I do not know anything about that model. I would have bought both guns in the same caliber though. That way you just have to buy 1 kind of ammo and never have to worry about mixing up the wrong ammo with the wrong gun. Me personally, I would go 9mm, just because the ammo is cheaper and more available. The .40 is a great round though.
You probably have 3 days to change the purchase, and I bet Gander would switch out the .40 for another 9mm with no problems.
I would recommend frangible rounds, that way the perp/attacker gets a very lethal shot, but very limited damage to anyone else behind him. I actually think cops should use these rounds.
These are just my humble opinions.

thanks Joe, the reason I wanted to get different calibers is so we can tell them apart. I was recommended "Hydro Shok" rounds for taking down offenders, I was told they have fantastic ballistics that don't frag until they hit a flesh like substance (in terms of density). Also, they are exactly the same gun. I can swap the slide and the clip and they function perfectly on each others grip. pretty convenient if you ask me.

All cops I know, who use a .40 or a 9mm (most if not all), use Hydro Shok ammo, which is a hollow point.undercoverjoe wrote: I would recommend frangible rounds, that way the perp/attacker gets a very lethal shot, but very limited damage to anyone else behind him. True. You can't shoot what you can't see. My pap said that once when he was deer hunting.Marshall Blue wrote:Ya know this kind a stuff doesn't help anyone find musicians![]()

Good choice again, Hydro Shok ammo are great rounds. The frangible rounds will do similar damage, but to only the perp you hit, no fragment goes through to hit anything/anyone behind.KyleMayket wrote:thanks Joe, the reason I wanted to get different calibers is so we can tell them apart. BTW, I hope and pray that I never have to use any gun on any human being at any time in my life. But unfortunately, not everyone thinks that way, so we protect ourselves.

.40 is a nice round.
I also have a S&W sigma .40... but, I'm starting to despise any weapon with a complex barrel movement (like the 1911, sigma, xd, glock, etc) and no locking block barrel lockup.
My favorites and by far the most accurate guns I own, is from Beretta. The 92 and the 96 are my #1 and #2 respectively. You can usually pop off rounds quicker at the same accuracy in 9mm over .40.
I know the hydroshok rounds are expensive, but take some to the range if thats what you're going to use.. They pack a slight bit more punch than your normal rounds sold by the 50. You want to know what to expect.

Go talk to Bobby Buchanan in Juniata (Pioneer Gun Sales).songsmith wrote:I've been thinking about a .40, I've heard the cops are heading that way because of the stopping power, and generally nice pricing. Is there a local gun place with attractive pricing? I don't care for gunshows, too many Rambo's, I'd rather deal with a good local guy.--->JMS

I have bought a gun there, but the guy is the most un-personable person I have ever met. He must have missed the class on customer relations.songsmith wrote:That's where I was thinking, too.--->JMSDirtySanchez wrote:[Go talk to Bobby Buchanan in Juniata (Pioneer Gun Sales).
Chuck and Mark at the Allegheny Trading Post in Duncansville are a hoot. Not the best prices, but they do have a wealth of knowledge and great people skills. Best jackalope around, too.
If you are totally into lowest price, East Coast. About as personable as online shopping though.

Sporting Goods Discounters in Johnstown, or like I did, I went to Gander Mountain, cuz they have GREAT deals, and most of the guys at the gun dept. have good knowledge and advice. Come on, a gun (.40 or 9mm) with laser sight, 2 clips, and all the other goodies for $400?songsmith wrote:I've been thinking about a .40, I've heard the cops are heading that way because of the stopping power, and generally nice pricing. The person managing the gun department at Gander ran the gun dept. at Hornick's in Johnstown (Westend) for years. I even think he is a Hornick. BTW, I have been told that Rugers are going for a good price at Campbells in Hollidaysburg, one of them is a Ruger sales rep. I want to get a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 Magnum with a scope mount. That would be my white tail gun, if I get good enough with it.KyleMayket wrote:Sporting Goods Discounters in Johnstown, or like I did, I went to Gander Mountain, cuz they have GREAT deals, and most of the guys at the gun dept. have good knowledge and advice. When I was a kid, a neighbor hunted with a .44... It was satin-finish stainless, with a matching scope, and walnut grips. It was the size of a small child, though. I could barely hold it on target, it was so heavy, much less fire it. Sure made big holes, though. You wouldn't want to see it sticking out of a screen door if you were siphoning gas.
Not that I ever did that.

His son was brutally murdered a few years ago (not by a gun), and they never found the killer. I'd imagine that would change my personality a little bit too. He does have some crazy Nazi memorabilia in his store though!undercoverjoe wrote:I have bought a gun there, but the guy is the most un-personable person I have ever met.
